The 2025 Annual Symposium of Future Earth Taipei, themed “Beyond SDG 2030,” successfully concluded amidst vibrant discussions and enthusiastic exchanges. Focusing on sustainable development issues, this one-and-a-half-day event attracted experts and scholars primarily from Taiwan, delivering diverse perspectives and inspiring conversations.

The symposium featured distinguished scholars and officials who shared their insights on critical topics. Dr. Wen-Ling Hong, Associate Professor at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology and former Deputy Minister of the Ocean Affairs Council, explored the future directions of marine sustainability through the lens of ocean science and policy. Meanwhile, Dr. Chi-Ming Peng, the current Minister of the Ministry of Environment highlighted Taiwan’s latest achievements in climate change adaptation and circular economy policies. Additionally, the symposium was honored to welcome Dr. Maria Uhle, Co-Chair of the Future Earth Governing Council, and Dr. Fumiko Kasuga, Director of Future Earth Japan Hub, who shared cutting-edge research and insights on sustainability from international and Asian perspectives.


The symposium covered a broad array of multidisciplinary topics central to sustainable development, including just transition, sustainable consumption and production, climate change impacts, smart agriculture, green finance, and ocean blue carbon. Special attention was given to problem-oriented research and transdisciplinary approaches. Teams involved in Belmont Forum international collaborations presented their accomplishments and shared practical experiences in advancing sustainability research, providing attendees with diverse perspectives and inspiration within the realm of sustainability science.


One of this year’s highlights was the use of digital displays to showcase the work of various working groups. During breaks, group coordinators enthusiastically introduced their 2024 research achievements and outlined plans for 2025. The Early Career Researchers (ECR) working group brought youthful energy and interactive fun to the poster sessions with their dynamic presentations, showcasing the passion and vitality of the next generation.


This year’s symposium was undoubtedly a remarkable gathering of knowledge and exchange. Looking ahead, we hope to continue advancing sustainability research with the support of all sectors, paving the way for a brighter future in sustainability science in Taiwan!
