What Makes A Dresser Sustainable?

As with anything in sustainability, there are various approaches that can make something “sustainable”.

Secondhand

With over 12 million tons (or 24 billion pounds) of furniture getting wasted each year in the United States alone, it’s definitely a great idea to look used when possible!

Secondhand not only helps divert furniture from the landfill, but reduces the need to extract new materials, whether that’s metal, wood, cotton, or increasingly, petroleum for synthetic fabrics and plastic.

Here’s where to look for secondhand dressers:

Responsibly Sourced Wood

Most storage furniture, like dressers, are made from wood (or engineered wood). While wood is a natural “renewable” material, deforestation is a leading cause of climate change and habitat loss.

So, look for domestic or certified sustainably-sourced wood when purchasing wooden furniture. The largest most common certification is FSC, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council.

Even better is if you can find furniture made from reclaimed wood. This is basically would-be-wasted wood that is being repurposed. This reclaimed wood can come from old barns, ships, factories, warehouses, or even wine barrels. (Note: there is just one brand on this list with reclaimed wood, since I’ve also vetted for aesthetics, and the reclaimed wood can sometimes look a bit too rustic for my own taste.)

While FSC certifies the material, another sustainability certification to look for on the company level is The Climate Label requires a brand to measure its greenhouse gas emissions, set a “carbon price”, and fund verified climate solutions.

Non-Toxic Finishes

Unfortunately, many wood finishes contain harmful petroleum- and chemical-based solvents which can emit VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. While the toxicity is most severe during application and does reduce with time, the chemicals can build up in your home, so you may feel most comfortable minimizing risk of VOCs.

Why does this matter? Well, the EPA reports that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air — largely due to what we bring into our homes, from furniture to household cleaners.

Look for low-VOC finishes, water-based finishes, or natural oil finishes like linseed oil. You may see the term GREENGUARD certified when it comes to finishes, which is a third-party verification by UL Solutions that its been tested to emit very low levels of volatile organic compounds and toxic chemicals into the air.

Ethical Production

For many sustainable furniture makers, this looks like producing locally where they either have full ownership of their factory or a close partnership with their facility.

For large furniture retailers with perhaps less personal relationships with their suppliers, I look for a certification like Fair Trade Certifiedâ„¢which verifies that the production facility follows Fair Trade Certified’s 100+ compliance criteria across social, environmental, and economic standards. Companies have to pay a premium that goes back to workers as part of this certification.

Where to Find Sustainably Made Dressers

I’ve done the grunt work for you and curated furniture brands with sustainable dressers, armoires, and wardrobes below! Note that this guide includes affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you if you choose to make a purchase through these links.

1. Urban Natural

Best for: wide selection of dresser styles and finishes

Conscious Qualities: Sustainably-Sourced Woods, GREENGUARD certified finishes (check each product)

Price Range: $310 – $9650

For a one-stop shop for sustainable storage furniture from a range of brands, check out Urban Natural. I love the retailer’s selection of design-forward sustainable dressers (including non-toxic dressers for nurseries) made with responsibly sourced wood and several with non-toxic finishes too.

Urban Natural’s workshop partners use materials like solid oak, cherry, maple, and walnut — and many of the brands prioritize local sourcing as well. Though their furniture is on the higher price end, with a few exceptions.

2. Avocado

Best for: reclaimed wood dresser

Conscious Qualities: Reclaimed or FSC-Certified Wood, 10-Year Warranty, Climate Label Certified, Non-Toxic Finish

Price Range: $2599 – $4599

Avocado’s sustainable dressers are made in Los Angeles in their own FSC-certified woodshop. Desi gned with a timeless mid-century modern or more rustic aesthetic, each dresser is made with either responsibly sourced or reclaimed wood. (The only reclaimed wood option I found in my research that met my standards for aesthetics.) Most of the company’s non-toxic bedroom furniture is also finished with a zero VOC sealant.

The brand currently has only two options for dressers (plus a kids option), but they are ready to ship.

3. Thuma

Best for: minimalist modular dressers that ship quickly

Conscious Qualities: Upcycled Solid Wood, GREENGUARD Gold Certified, Modular

Price Range: $1,185 – $3,555

Designed for functionality and versatility, Thuma has ready-to-ship modular dressers that you can configure as a larger nightstand, a kids dresser, credenza, or large dresser for a primary bedroom.

Seeing the amount of furniture waste generated through moving, I think modularity is an underrated sustainability feature — whether you’re downsizing or moving to a larger space the furniture can be adapted to your needs.

4. Medley

Best for: premium sustainable furniture with exceptional quality

Conscious Qualities: FSC-Certified Solid Hardwood, Non-Toxic Finish

Price Range: $3995 – $4395

Medley has a few options for dressers, all handmade to order by furniture artisans in California. The 4-drawer wide dresser pictured here comes in maple or walnut sourced domestically in the US. The company also sells a 6-drawer wide dresser with more space, as well as 3-drawer and 4-drawer tall dressers, and even an armoire.

The tops and sides are solid hardwood, while the rest is plywood. I know this isn’t ideal for those looking for truly non-toxic furniture, but it is exceedingly common with cabinetry. The dressers are finished with a natural beeswax.

5. MasayaCo

Best for: supporting reforestation projects

Conscious Qualities: FSC-Certified Reforested Wood, 1.3 Million Trees Planted

Price Range: $1995 – $2995

MasayaCo certainly has the most distinguishable dressers on this list with FSC-certified solid teak wood furniture made from their own reforestation projects. The company leaves 40% of these planting projects completely untouched to thrive on their own, which is a rare sustainability initiative I appreciate about the brand. And each piece is made to order by skilled artisans in Nicaragua, near where the trees are planted.

While their cabinets may be more suited for credenzas than dressers, their Catalina Dresser is a highlight.

6. West Elm Sustainably Sourced Collection

Best for: better options at a traditional retailer

Conscious Qualities: Options for Non-Toxic, Responsibly-Sourced Wood, and Made in Fair Trade Certifiedâ„¢Factories

Price Range: $599 – $2499

West Elm is a large retailer with options for more eco-friendly dressers. Among their selection, you can curate by filters such as Sustainably Sourced and Contract Grade (high quality and durable) via their “Sustainability” menu item. The retailer also has several options for kids dressers.

Though I should note that not everything from West Elm is sustainably sourced, so look at the product descriptions for more information. Pro tip: I regularly browse West Elm’s “Open Box Outlet” for deals on returned furniture that have minor wear.

7. Healthier Homes

Best for: natural non-toxic wood dressers

Conscious Qualities: Natural Materials, Non-Toxic Finishes

Price Range: $899 – $2390

Made from sustainable Mindi and Bayur woods, and finished with a water-based non-toxic clear finish, Healthier Homes’ dressers have a natural wood grain that adds organic texture to your bedroom.

Healthier Homes is committed to non-toxic solutions for your interiors and has a strict no MDF/particleboard or forameldyde finishes policy. Their dressers might not fit every aesthetic, but if the light natural wood suits your style (I love the rattan option!), Healthier Homes is a great option for non-toxic dressers.
