I tried these 9 organic baby clothes brands with my little ones ages 15 months and 3.5 years old. Now those babies are 3 and 5.5! Here are my notes on comfort, durability, and brand ethics after two years of use.

There’s no way around it, kids are hard on clothes, which is why when shopping for mine I typically shop secondhand. When I am looking for something specific, though, or loved ones ask which brands we like, I’ll list one of the brands I’ve spent the last six years vetting.
Not only do I want something that my kids will be comfortable and safe in (no harsh chemicals) and that will withstand the wear and tear of childhood, but I also strive to remain mindful that our daily choices have an impact far beyond our family. When I look at my kids, I’m reminded daily that they are just two of the many precious children around the world, which is why it’s important to us that we consider ethics whenever possible. I’m also reminded that they will one day inherit this planet from us, and I want to do everything I can to treat it with love, gentleness and respect.
Why consider organic baby clothes?
Babies have especially sensitive skin and exposure to harmful chemicals and dyes can lead to irritations, allergies, and other health issues. (Anyone who’s been up in the middle of the night with a screaming infant knows — you want to eliminate ANY possible irritants as fast as possible! 😩) Organic cotton and other natural fibers are breathable and help regulate body temperature, reducing the risk of overheating, which is essential for a baby’s wellbeing.
There are also ethical and environmental considerations when buying organic. Organic farming practices use fewer synthetic chemicals, reduce water and soil pollution, and support biodiversity. This is good for the earth and also for the people involved in the production of the garments. Oh, and the cherry on top — natural fibers break down on their own so no worries about them hanging around forever in a landfill.
Our methodology & criteria:
The Good Trade editors selected these nine brands offering organic baby clothes, and I personally tested each with my two kiddos, both of whom have extra-sensitive skin. I made notes on the fit, comfort, and functionality of each brand, as well as how they’ve held up over the last two years of use. I also dove into their ethics and certifications, so you know you’re getting the safest, comfiest options out there. We regularly update this list with emerging picks when they meet the following criteria.
- ORGANIC | Each of these brands offers baby clothing made from organic cotton or other natural fibres grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). All use natural, nontoxic dyes. I have included notes on the softest materials and most versatile styles for easy on-and-off wear.
- BRAND ETHICS | Each of these brands adheres to ethical and fair labor practices, ensuring that the people involved in the production of these garments are treated fairly and paid a living wage.
- DURABILITY | Organic baby clothing is often durable and well-made, which can lead to longer-lasting pieces. We’ve selected brands we find ourselves passing down to younger siblings (and each other’s kids!) — and I’ve made notes on how they do through wash and wear.

Pehr was founded by two childhood friends who were on a mission to create ‘playfully sophisticated’ kidswear, and did they ever succeed. As functional as they are beautiful, Pehr’s heirloom-quality organic denim and corduroy are among my favorite items in my kids’ closet. I had both kids run, play, and get messy in these pieces and each one held up on the playground and washed well, even after crawling through the dirt and getting bright red strawberry stains all over them. Both kids have played to their hearts’ content and I noticed not one garment gaping, sliding down or riding up, which allowed me to watch and enjoy with ease. Pehr is the spot for pieces that are beautiful enough for family photos, durable enough for daycare and so nostalgic you’ll want to pass them on to future generations. After years of use, Pehr remains my favorite overall brand for beautiful, functional pieces, and these particular pieces were worn repeatedly until they were too small.

Manymoons is America’s first circular fashion retailer, sourcing ethically produced garments made from natural and regenerative materials. Every piece has been rescued from landfill (sometimes multiple times, thanks to their rescued collections, clothing rental and give back programs!) and all post-consumer clothing is commercially composted and returned to the earth at the end of its life. From organic baby bonnets to boutique dresses, the site offers mostly anything one might be looking for, depending on available inventory. When my Manymoons box arrived, each item was beautifully yet minimally packaged in simple brown paper. The quality of each piece is gorgeous, and my daughter wanted to put her full-length gingham dress on right away. I immediately knew these pieces would become family heirlooms, and they have. After my daughter outgrew her quilted jacket, I tucked it away as a keepsake. As for my favorite dress below? She still wears it regularly two years later, even though the hemline now hits her knees instead of her ankles. They also carry Women’s pieces from brands like Beamont Organic and Outerknown, so go ahead and browse those while you’re at it, mama!

Primary’s offers timeless essentials inspired by simplicity, and their mission is to provide parents with a go-to place for quality clothes without logos, slogans or gendered prescriptions. Two initial thoughts: This is the go-to place for COLOR, and browsing their offerings makes me HAPPY. The pictured matching pajama sets are their Cherry colorway, and after two wears, it became immediately apparent that these are among my favorite pajama sets I’ve ever tried. These sets are easy to slip on and off, buttery soft to the touch, fit snugly and are lightweight yet also sturdy and stretchy (you can give them a good yank and not be nervous they’ll tear), and they have enough give to grow as the kids do, and they have! After two years of use, my daughter can still fit into the soft, stretchy two-piece set, and my son will soon fit into it.

It’s no secret here at The Good Trade, we love Quince for their affordable, ethical fashion, which is why we had to try their baby collection for ourselves! Quince’s OEKO-TEX 100% organic cotton collection features all the basics any parent could need — knits, tops, bottoms, socks, hats and sets. Simply put, I was impressed by the quality of their knitwear, especially given the price. These reminded me of some of the higher-quality sweaters in my own closet: soft, structured, and satisfyingly chunky. I’ll note that after two years of use, the elastic in the knitwear waistbands and necklines was struggling to keep up. On the flip side, my daughter’s black leggings are still a staple in her wardrobe, and she wears them regularly even after dozens of washes. Their garment bundles continue to impress ($34.90 for a four-pack of leggings!), and everything runs true to size. This is the one-stop organic shop that’ll cover all of the baby bases.

Hanna Andersson is widely known and loved for their high-quality basics and themed sleepwear, and for good reason. Their collections feature pieces made from 100 percent certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified cotton, and they ship globally, which is excellent for those outside of the US or for those of us gifting to loved ones abroad. Our family has long loved their pajamas and seasonal wear, and Hanna Andersson is one of the only brands I will willingly buy new because I know I will get years of use out of each garment. The quality is exceptional (making the price per wear minimal), and the fit is *chefs kiss*. Our kids have each enjoyed a set of holiday PJs every year, and I can reliably pass my daughter’s PJs onto my son every time she outgrows them. Every item we have from Hanna Andersson is in great condition despite many, many washes, tumbles and messes (I recall my then 15-month-old playing in a puddle in the backyard, saturated in mud from his chest down). We’ve noticed their garments run large, so keep that in mind when ordering and/or shopping secondhand. They have their own site where you can shop pre-loved pieces, too!

Inspired by the richness and simplicity of her own childhood, Organic Zoo’s founder, Paulina wanted to make clothes that children can wear while fully embracing play, imagination and wonder. Each piece is designed in England and ethically manufactured primarily by women at a small factory in Ukraine. This brand resonated deeply with me as someone who was raised to appreciate the land and the abundance the earth has to offer. These minimal, comfortable items are made to be played in, passed on to the next generation again and again, and returned to the earth when they’ve reached the end of their life. These sets were some of my favorites — the sweatshirt and pants lost their shape after about a dozen washes, but the flannel pants will long live in my memory as a staple in their childhood. Organic Zoo offers to rehome outgrown garments with their buy-back program, too.

Did you know Burt’s Bees makes clothing in addition to bath and body care? I didn’t either! With a GOTS certification for the highest standards in organic textiles and just like their cosmetics, they’re predictably committed to making their goods affordable and safe. These quilted sets are lightweight yet plush and wash exceptionally well – I actually preferred the feel and fit once we’d washed them a couple of times. I noticed the bottoms run slightly longer than other brands, but the cinched ankles and drawstrings make these sets a staple in every season. Two years and dozens of washes later, my son now wears my daughter’s original set whenever he needs a light layer.

Started by a mama on a mission herself, this GOTS-certified organic cotton baby clothing is ethically made, sustainably produced, and gives back to help a child in need. With baby apparel through 24M as well as children’s clothing to 6Y, this perfect one-stop shop provides laid-back, low-maintenance yet polished looks for the little ones in your life. One thing about me as a mom is that I love a set for easy matching and comfort that you can put your child to sleep in and not even have to change them in the morning for nursery school (one of my all-time favorite parenting strategies). These sets from Colored Organics are buttery soft, lightweight, and the perfect basics for throwing over a t-shirt on a summer evening or wearing under a jacket in the cooler months. While I loved these, they did not survive the harsh play conditions of preschool, so I recommend shopping for darker colorways and not putting them in the dryer. (Note: These ran larger than most other brands I’ve tried, so keep that in mind when shopping or searching secondhand. )
