Key Takeaways:

  • Thrive Market works well for people who may not have easy access to natural or organic food stores, since they deliver to all the contiguous US states. Their curated selection adapts to different life stages, making it easy to find ethical and sustainable groceries and home essentials that fit your current needs.
  • The annual membership works out to about $5/month, and the site is a more cost-effective way to shop for multiple items, including pantry staples, beauty and hygiene products, and pet and baby supplies.
  • Thrive is Carbon Neutral Certified, and for their plastic shipping materials, they purchase plastic recovery credits through rePurpose Global to cover usage. All orders are shipped via TRUE Certified Zero-Waste Fulfillment centers.

I’m finally pregnant after a six year infertility journey. Exhales audibly. After such a long, emotional wait, I had some interesting ideas about what I thought pregnancy would look like — eating organic for every meal, joyfully embracing every body change and symptom, working out four times a week (this one really makes me laugh now). The reality is that convenience has trumped nearly every pre-pregnancy intention I set for myself and my top priorities are keeping myself fed and functioning, whatever that looks like each week. Which is why Thrive Market — an online one-stop shop that offers a wide range of organic pantry staples, clean beauty essentials, nontoxic home supplies, pet products, and so much more — has earned a permanent spot in my (new) routine.

Pregnancy has turned me into a very different kind of shopper. I didn’t magically become someone who loves grocery shopping, and my needs seem to switch up every few weeks. In my first trimester, I was searching for teas (or lozenges or chews or anything that would help) to help with nausea — along with foods that I could actually stomach. Weeks later, I was scouring the internet for belly oils to soothe my stretching, itchy skin. Now, protein-packed snacks are essential to keep up with my never-ending appetite, and freezer-friendly dinners come in clutch on the nights when neither my partner nor I have the energy to cook.

It’s made me zoom in on just how many stores it takes to check every box these days. Sure, we still pop into our closest natural grocer for produce (how does fruit taste SO good during pregnancy?), but then it’s off to another grocery store for the specific gluten-free bread my partner prefers, another stop for household essentials, and maybe one more if I need to replenish my clean beauty go-tos. As DINKs — dual income, no kids — spending half a Sunday wandering around grocery store aisles (if you call it a date day, it’s actually quite cute) can be kind of fun. Now, I don’t really have the energy, and I know it won’t get any easier when we’re parenting.

While it’s certainly not the only online delivery service for groceries and household essentials, Thrive feels like a marketplace that will be able to keep up with whatever season of life I’m in — pregnancy essentials, introducing our daughter to solids, spring cleaning, quick-and-easy dinners. And the brands they carry are vetted rigorously. Thrive bans over 1,000 harmful ingredients on its “Never” List, prioritizes organic whenever possible, and Partners with third-party certifications like Fair Trade and Leaping Bunny Certified Cruelty-Free. Sometimes I’m in the mood to do deep vetting of brands on my own; it is what we do here at The Good Trade, after all. But there’s something about being able to trust that Thrive’s in-house products and brand partners hold the same standards as me that is such a relief.

“Thrive feels like a marketplace that will be able to keep up with whatever season of life I’m in.”

Getting started is straightforward. After signing up for a risk-free membership (most people choose the annual plan, which works out to ~$5 per month billed annually; month-to-month subscription is $12/month), Thrive walks you through a short quiz to personalize your experience. With almost 7,000 products available, this customization really makes a difference. My homepage quickly filled with pregnancy-friendly teas, easy-to-grab snacks, as well as wellness products and household staples (and some new-to-me brands, which I think is so fun!) that I’d actually use instead of making me sift through thousands of unrelated items.

My cart ended up feeling like a snapshot of my third trimester.

The first thing I added was belly oil — which I’ve been reaching for daily lately — to help nourish my stretching skin. It absorbs quickly (I cannot do greasy or sticky body oils) and has a very subtle natural scent. Applying it has become such a lovely daily ritual. Then came the snacks: pitted kalamata olive packs, sweet potato chips made with coconut oil, organic fruit circles (I’m a sucker for a fruit leather moment), and organic, regeneratively grown chile lime dried pineapple that really surprised me with how quickly they became a favorite snack, as that’s not a flavor profile I typically like! Pregnancy hunger is truly no joke, and I appreciated having so many organic, convenient options in one place.

I also picked up a couple pregnancy teas: a nausea tea for when that creeps back in in the final weeks of pregnancy and a third trimester tea with raspberry leaf, nettle leaf, and rosehips to prep for birth. These teas barely scratch the surface of what comes up when you type pregnancy into Thrive’s search bar — I could easily browse for 45 minutes picking up new-to-me pregnancy-safe snacks, tinctures, and more.

Throughout my pregnancy, my partner has done the majority of the cooking in our house (before pregnancy too, if I’m being honest), but everyone needs a night off sometimes. So we were excited to find a gluten-free boxed pasta that made us both nostalgic — think grown-up Velveeta, if that’s your thing. It’s exactly the kind of comfort meal we keep on hand for evenings when we’d rather veg on the couch than cook from scratch.

A cardboard box labeled "Belong to a Better Market" sits on a doormat in front of a closed white door with a gold mail slot and handle.

One thing that surprised me was how much more Thrive Market carries beyond pantry staples. I look forward to restocking some of my favorite nontoxic beauty products (from simple items like cotton rounds and pimple patches to specialty hair care and clean mascara) in my next order. Thrive really is a one-stop marketplace for the brands I already trust — and the product discovery element has been a fun surprise.

My order arrived quickly and everything was packed neatly, with kraft paper cushioning the products. Thrive’s boxes and inserts are made from 100% recycled paper, the packing materials are recyclable or reusable (some are even compostable!), and all orders ship via ground shipping — emitting significantly less carbon than air freight. Thrive ships to residential and commercial addresses throughout the contiguous United States, with shipping costs based on your order. They are Climate Neutral Certified, purchase plastic recovery credits through rePurpose Global to account for any plastic packaging, and they fulfill every order through TRUE Certified Zero Waste facilities. While there’s always room to improve, I appreciate the brand’s efforts to reduce their environmental impact where possible.

One of my favorite perks? I actually spent less money than I usually do grocery shopping. Without wandering every aisle and tossing just one more thing into my cart, I found myself sticking to exactly what I needed, even as I was browsing new brands and snacks to try.

“I actually spent less money than I usually do grocery shopping. Without wandering every aisle and tossing just one more thing into my cart, I found myself sticking to exactly what I needed.”

For now, my Thrive orders revolve around pregnancy. But I can already see how useful it’ll be postpartum and beyond, too — from stocking easy freezer meals and one-handed breastfeeding snacks to eventually ordering baby essentials once all our generous shower gifts run out (plus, who wants to make hard decisions when they’re sleep deprived? Not I!). And down the road, I imagine it’ll become even more valuable when we’re introducing solids and suddenly shopping for an entirely new stage of life.

That’s what I think Thrive Market does best. It isn’t just an online grocery store — it grows and shifts with you. Whatever season you’re in, whether that’s baby prep mode, feeding a large family (3+ times a day, mind you), navigating dietary restrictions, or wanting to simplify your routine and grocery shopping trips, Thrive makes it easy to get all the ethical and sustainable groceries and household essentials you need in one curated place.
