I love Emerson, but I don’t get this at all. Is there anything amusing about any of the world religions that existed a generation (or many) ago?
Were the people of the Renaissance amused by the Spanish Inquisition?
Are you amused by the southern Christians who lynched the black Americans in the 20th Century, while law enforcement looked on with a smile?
Are you pleased that our kids in the public schools of the Deep South are being forced to read the bible?
