BMW’s first iX4 electric coupe SUV will arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2027, bringing up to 828km of claimed driving range and a starting price of $103,900 before on-road costs.

Two dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants will be offered initially: the iX4 40 xDrive at $103,900 and the iX4 50 xDrive at $119,900.

An M60 xDrive performance flagship will join the Australian line-up later in 2027. BMW’s global press kit lists provisional outputs of 450kW and 875Nm, a 3.9-second 0-100km/h sprint and up to 777km of WLTP range from a 108.7kWh usable battery. Australian pricing has not been announced.

The electric iX4 slots into similar price territory to the petrol-powered X4. Against the 2025 X4 list prices, the $103,900 iX4 40 xDrive is $6200 dearer than the X4 xDrive20i M Sport but $4500 cheaper than the xDrive30i M Sport. The $119,900 iX4 50 xDrive also undercuts the petrol six-cylinder X4 M40i by $17,300. All prices exclude on-road costs.

Logical rivals for the BMW iX4 include the Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron and Polestar 4 coupe, which also combine electric power with a sloping-roof SUV body. The Porsche Macan Electric and Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology provide alternatives for buyers considering a premium electric SUV, while the forthcoming iX4 M60 will target performance models such as the Audi SQ6 Sportback e-tron and Porsche Macan 4S Electric.

The iX4 is the third model built on BMW’s dedicated Neue Klasse electric architecture, following the iX3 SUV and i3 sedan, and extends the technology into a lower-roofed coupe SUV body.

It arrives amid a broader expansion of BMW’s electric range that also includes a confirmed i3 Touring wagon and the forthcoming iX5. The larger iX5 adopts Neue Klasse technology but uses an updated version of BMW’s existing CLAR platform.

The entry-level iX4 40 xDrive produces a combined 275kW and 520Nm, with BMW claiming a 5.6-second sprint from 0-100km/h.

Its 82.6kWh usable battery delivers up to 638km of WLTP range and supports DC charging at up to 300kW.

The iX4 50 xDrive increases outputs to 345kW and 645Nm, cutting the claimed 0-100km/h time to 4.9 seconds.

A larger 108.7kWh usable battery provides up to 828km of WLTP range, while maximum DC charging power rises to 400kW.

That gives the 50 xDrive the same battery capacity, power, torque and acceleration time as the equivalent iX3, but an extra 23km of maximum claimed range compared with the upright SUV’s 805km.

BMW claims both iX4 variants can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in 21 minutes at a suitable high-power charger. Under ideal conditions, the 50 xDrive can add up to 387km of WLTP range in 10 minutes, while the 40 xDrive can add up to 301km.

Both models use an 800-volt electrical system and BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, including cylindrical battery cells. The Australian technical specification table lists 22kW AC charging for both variants.

At that rate, BMW quotes a full recharge in four hours and 15 minutes for the 40 xDrive and five hours and 30 minutes for the 50 xDrive.

The global specification also lists bidirectional charging capability, including vehicle-to-load power at up to 3.7kW and vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid operation at up to 11kW. BMW Australia has not confirmed which functions will be available locally.

The quoted driving ranges are maximum WLTP figures, with BMW warning that optional larger wheels reduce range.

Measuring 4782mm long, 1895mm wide and 1595mm high, the iX4 rides on a 2897mm wheelbase and has a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23.

Its sloping roofline is accompanied by a pronounced rear spoiler and slim horizontal rear lights, while the front combines BMW’s kidney grille and headlights into a single graphic treatment.

Boot capacity is 490 litres, expanding to 1600 litres with the rear seats folded. Another 58 litres of storage is available beneath the bonnet.

The coupe body carries a practicality penalty compared with the iX3, which offers a 520-litre boot and 1750 litres with its rear seats folded.

Both launch variants are rated to tow up to 2000kg braked in European specification, although an Australian towing figure has not been confirmed in the local release.

Australian standard equipment includes an M Sport package, 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Both variants also receive electrically adjustable front seats with memory, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon audio, wireless phone charging and an automatic tailgate.

The cabin adopts BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, combining a display projected across the lower section of the windscreen with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a multifunction steering wheel.

A 3D head-up display is also listed as standard in the Australian equipment schedule, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control, steering and lane control assistance, and Parking Assistant Plus.

BMW’s “Heart of Joy” computer coordinates the drive system, braking, energy recuperation and steering-related functions. The company claims regenerative braking can handle up to 98 per cent of braking in everyday driving.

The M60 adds an electronically controlled rear locking differential and specific chassis tuning, according to the global press kit. Final Australian equipment details are yet to be announced.

Options for the launch variants include a $3500 M Sport Pro package, $4000 leather upholstery and wheels up to 22 inches. Most metallic paint finishes cost $2000, while Frozen Space Silver costs $6000.

The iX4 will be built at BMW’s Debrecen factory in Hungary.
