Vestaron’s groundbreaking bioinsecticide SPEAR® LEP has received a second emergency use authorization (EUA) in Greece for the control of tomato leafminer, providing Greek tomato growers continued access to a powerful new tool against a costly and devastating pest.

Earlier this year, Greece became the first country in the EU to grant emergency access to SPEAR LEP, followed by Italy and Cyprus. Tomato leafminer, also known as Tuta absoluta, has taken a catastrophic toll on European tomato production. SPEAR LEP has demonstrated robust efficacy against the target pest, including in resistant populations, while being soft on pollinators, workers, and local biodiversity.

Greece’s decision to grant a second EUA underscores the urgent need for effective, new crop protection products in Europe as synthetic pesticides are becoming increasingly restricted. SPEAR LEP will be available under the second EUA from 22 July to 19 November 2024.

The latest EUA will allow us to continue supporting Greece’s tomato growers with our proven technology that provides protection against devastating pests while also delivering best in class sustainability. We continue to work toward full registration of the product in the EU so growers can have permanent access to the tools they need to protect high-value crops.”
