MojiaBio has announced a partnership with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to establish a Sustainable Biomanufacturing Technology Platform (SBTP) in Singapore. This project involves an investment of SGD 44.8 million (around USD 33 million) and aims to enhance green chemistry and sustainable biomanufacturing.

The SBTP will integrate synthetic biology and bioprocessing innovations, positioning Singapore as a global leader in sustainable biomanufacturing. It seeks to facilitate the transition to a circular bioeconomy and net-zero future.

SBTP focuses on producing a range of high-value biobased molecules that are cost-competitive and serve various industries. By utilizing low-cost resources such as methanol and ethylene glycol, the platform provides sustainable alternatives to traditional chemical processes.

One significant product targeted for production is 1,3-propanediol (PDO), which is used in industries like skincare, coatings, and biodegradable plastics. Industry experts predict that the global market for green chemicals will reach USD 200 billion by 2030, reflecting an increasing demand for sustainable options.

At the core of the SBTP are MojiaBio’s proprietary Cn+Bioâ„¢ pathway and OrthBio® bioconversion process, which convert low-cost renewable resources into biobased molecules. This effort will take place alongside A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (A*STAR SIFBI), which offers expertise in enzyme engineering.

Additionally, the SBTP will leverage the computational modeling expertise of the National University of Singapore (NUS) to enhance enzyme and microbial strain engineering. This optimization will improve the efficiency and scalability of biocatalysts within the platform.

The SBTP operates independently of its host cell metabolism, which enhances energy efficiency and sustainability while also reducing production costs. This approach aims to make sustainable solutions more accessible and meet the growing demand for biobased chemicals in various industries.
