Steel Dynamics, a prominent steel producer listed on NASDAQ, has announced innovative lower-embodied-carbon steel products named BIOEDGE
and EDGE
. These offerings are designed to help customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable manufacturing practices. Both steel types are produced exclusively with electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, emphasizing eco-friendly processes.
BIOEDGE uses renewable biocarbon sourced from SDI Biocarbon Solutions, a joint venture partially owned by Steel Dynamics. This biocarbon replaces traditional anthracite in the steelmaking process, significantly lowering Scope 1 emissions. The steel is also paired with renewable energy certificates, such as Green-e Energy, or emission-free nuclear energy, further reducing Scope 2 emissions.
Mark D. Millett, Steel Dynamics’ Chairman and CEO, emphasized the company’s leadership in sustainable steel production. “Our circular manufacturing model and innovative teams enable us to produce lower-embodied-carbon steel with renewable biocarbon,” he said. “Expanding these offerings supports our customers’ decarbonization efforts while maintaining high performance and quality.”
The new EDGE family will be available across Steel Dynamics’ operations. They expect with immediate interest from the automotive, construction, renewable energy, and infrastructure sectors. The use of renewable biocarbon in BIOEDGE highlights the company’s commitment to integrating bio-based materials into steel production to lower carbon footprints.
This initiative underscores Steel Dynamics’ dedication to environmental innovation. By incorporating renewable biocarbon and sustainable energy sources, the company offers a pathway for industries to adopt greener, more circular manufacturing practices. The launch of BIOEDGE and EDGE demonstrates a significant move toward bio-based, eco-friendly steel solutions for a sustainable future.
