Aptar Pharma has announced that its Freepod® nasal spray pump, used with Haleon’s Otrivin® nasal spray, now incorporates mass balance bio-based resins. This marks the first time Aptar’s delivery system is made with sustainable materials and is available worldwide. The company highlights this development as a significant step toward reducing fossil-based plastics in healthcare packaging.

The innovative spray pump is made from 52% ISCC Plus certified bio-based feedstock. The bottle is produced using a mass balance approach, ensuring it is equivalent to 100% bio-based content. When combined, the pump and bottle achieve an overall circular material content of 60%, supporting sustainability goals.

Aptar Pharma’s manufacturing site in Mezzovico, Switzerland, holds ISCC PLUS certification, ensuring full traceability of materials throughout production. This certification extends to external suppliers, including injection molders, logistics providers, and partners, ensuring a fully certified supply chain.

The collaboration between Haleon and Aptar Pharma spans over 30 years, emphasizing their shared commitment to sustainability. This partnership led to the 2019 World Packaging Award for the innovative design of the Freepod® device. Haleon aims to reduce virgin petroleum-based plastics by one-third by 2030, supported by sustainable packaging innovations like this one.

Gael Touya, President of Aptar Pharma, expressed pride in the company’s sustainability efforts. He emphasized that the launch of Freepod® Futurity™ aligns with their strategy to develop solutions meeting consumer demand for eco-friendly healthcare delivery. This collaboration demonstrates Aptar’s dedication to supporting the healthcare industry’s shift toward more sustainable practices, from formulation to patient care.
