The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is pleased to announce the publication of its first Application Study under the Book and Claim capacity-building project in Brazil. As the first of a four Application studies, this study marks the starting point of a broader effort to strengthen technical knowledge, regulatory readiness, and market understanding around high-integrity Book and Claim systems.

About the Project

The project aims to promote sustainability in Brazil’s SAF production, empowering stakeholders to understand the benefits of the Book and Claim mechanism for strengthening global market integration in the aviation sector and connecting SAF supply with demand. The project aims to contribute as follows:

  • Increasing awareness and understanding of a Book and Claim system by the Brazilian stakeholders;
  • Co-create knowledge with stakeholders on how the Book and Claim aligns with local industry and policy;
  • Incentivising sustainable practices across the SAF supply chain since the implementation of the Book and Claim required the sustainability certification of the supply chain operators;
  • Fostering collaboration among industry players, corporates, policymakers, and civil society;
  • Contributing to Brazil’s sustainability leadership by adopting an innovative solution, such as a book and claim, to support the development of a new supply chain.

Application Study 1 — Unlocking the Value of Book & Claim in Brazil

The newly released Application Study #1: Unlocking the Value of Book & Claim for the Brazilian Market: Decarbonising Scope 1 and Scope 3 Emissions demonstrates how a high-integrity Book and Claim System can support Brazil’s aviation and logistics sectors in addressing emissions, even where physical access to SAF is limited.

Using a practical hypothetical scenario built around COP30, the study illustrates how SAF producers, traders, airlines, freight forwarders, and corporate end-users can collaborate through the Book and Claim system and Registry to attribute verified GHG emissions reductions. It also highlights how Book and Claim:

  • Enables transparent and credible decarbonisation of Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions
  • Supports, technically, the implementation of the Fuel of the Future law, which recognises disassociated sustainability attributes
  • Mobilises corporate demand for SAF
  • Helps unlock financing for new SAF production projects, improving bankability through long-term offtake agreements
  • Facilitates cross-sector participation and fosters market growth

While centred on Brazil, the study presents a replicable and scalable framework that can be applied globally to support the expansion of robust Book and Claim systems aligned with RSB’s principles of traceability, auditability, and environmental integrity.

What Comes Next

This publication marks the first in a series of four Application Studies that will cover different aspects of Book and Claim, including additionality, interoperability, project financing, and benchmarking with other certificate systems.

RSB extends its appreciation to Airbus for funding this important work, and to the diverse group of Brazilian stakeholders who contributed insights, expertise, and technical validation throughout the development of this study.
