A European sustainability coalition has identified four molecule families as the fastest routes to scaling industrial biotechnology, potentially unlocking a market worth $1.1 trillion.
Advanced Biotech for Sustainability (AB4S) released its second annual report. The document narrows down 300 evaluated molecules to four priority families ready for immediate commercial production.
The coalition’s analysis highlights terpenes as the quickest win. These molecules already command premium prices in fragrance and flavor industries, with markets valued between $7 billion and $12 billion. The sector readily accepts bio-sourced versions.
Bioactive peptides represent another near-term opportunity. Applications range from cosmetics to agriculture, with projected markets reaching $2.2 billion to $3.4 billion by 2030. Regulatory pressures are driving demand for novel peptide solutions.
Functional proteins offer longer-term potential worth $21 billion to $31 billion. Unlike commodity proteins, these deliver specialized performance through foaming, gelling, and emulsification. Precision fermentation can produce them without animal agriculture.
Hydroxy acids present a different advantage: compatibility with existing chemical infrastructure. Fermentation-produced hydroxy acids can integrate into established processing facilities. This family represents an estimated $1.8 billion to $2 billion market, excluding common varieties like citric acid.
The report follows AB4S’ 2025 publication, which quantified the overall economic opportunity. This year’s version shifts focus to execution.
Stef van Grieken, CEO of coalition member Cradle, emphasized Europe’s competitive position. He cited the region’s sustainability support, skilled workforce, and AI-accelerated innovation as key advantages.
AB4S is calling for targeted infrastructure investment and cross-sector collaboration to advance these molecules from pilot programs to full industrial scale.
