UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt have announced a joint development of a new bio-based, paper-based food packaging concept. Designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions, this packaging offers strong grease protection and improved end-of-life performance, making it suitable for bakery, fast food, and convenience applications.

The solution combines UPM’s advanced barrier base papers with Paramelt’s innovative bio-based heat-seal and barrier coatings. These components are individually validated as home compostable, aligning with increasing consumer and regulatory focus on environmental sustainability.

“Our collaboration enables us to provide a bio-based packaging option with reliable grease resistance and compatibility with existing packaging lines,” said Christiane Laine, Senior Researcher at UPM. She highlighted that achieving such grease resistance at low coat weights is challenging, even with fossil-based coatings, but the combined solution delivers excellent performance.

The partnership pairs UPM Solide™ Lucent or Prego™ papers, engineered specifically for barrier coatings, with Paramelt’s Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383, a water-based, biodegradable coating. The materials are suitable for various food products, including bakery goods and greasy snacks, and work efficiently with standard coating processes used in existing production lines.

Leon Krings, Business Development Manager at Paramelt, noted that the coating is designed for reliable performance on current converting lines, facilitating a practical transition for brands seeking sustainable packaging options. The development underscores how industry leaders are working together to create more environmentally friendly packaging solutions that do not compromise on performance.
