Polska Grupa Biogazowa, Poland’s largest agricultural biogas operator, has signed an electricity trading partnership with Hekla Energy that will handle over 200GWh of biogas-derived power in its first year.

The deal is the first of its kind in Poland for electricity generated from agricultural biogas. It covers nearly all of PGB’s operating and newly built plants, representing more than 15% of Poland’s total agricultural biogas electricity output.

PGB currently runs 21 biogas plants with combined installed capacity of 22.5MW, producing around 200GWh annually. The company manages all facilities remotely through what it calls a Monitoring and Analysis Centre, a setup it describes as unique in Europe.

The partnership gives PGB broader access to trading products on the Polish Power Exchange. For Hekla Energy, it provides a dispatchable renewable source that can balance intermittent wind and solar generation.

Both companies highlighted the ability to avoid selling electricity during periods of negative prices, which have become increasingly common across European power markets. These episodes can reduce the value of support available under renewable auction and feed-in schemes.

Sabine Dujacquier, president of PGB’s management board, said the agreement would enable consistent, predictable energy supply from local renewable resources. She noted this matters particularly for businesses and institutions with ESG commitments and security of supply requirements.

Gracjan Grela, president of Hekla Energy, said the scale of the partnership could increase revenues by several million Polish złoty annually. He described the deal as demonstrating how trading expertise combined with advanced plant management infrastructure can improve returns for biogas producers.

Both companies emphasized the circular economy aspect, with agricultural waste streams being converted into productive energy supply.
