The Renewable Materials Conference will return to Siegburg, near Cologne, Germany, from 22 to 24 September 2026, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators focused on transitioning away from fossil-based chemicals and materials.

Organiser nova-Institute expects 400 to 500 participants from around the world. The conference has established itself as a leading global event for the renewable carbon economy, covering bioeconomy developments, carbon capture and utilisation, and recycling innovations.

This year’s theme, “Defossilisation through innovation,” reflects growing momentum toward replacing fossil resources in chemical and materials production. The programme features 80 presentations, over 20 panel discussions, and 16 intensive workshops.

The three-day event follows a structured format. Day one examines defossilisation of the chemical industry, including renewable carbon strategies and new pathways for speciality chemicals. Day two addresses fossil-free plastics across various sectors, from automotive to packaging. The final day explores market development and biodegradation science.

A highlight of the conference is the “Renewable Material of the Year 2026” innovation award. Six finalists, selected from recently submitted entries, will present their innovations during the conference. Attendees will vote live to determine three winners. Conference organisers indicate that submissions this year feature particularly compelling developments.

Supporters include major industry players such as UPM Biochemicals as platinum sponsor, with additional backing from Celluranics, GS Biomats, Leaf Biotech, and VERBIO. Covestro is sponsoring the innovation award.

Numerous industry associations and research institutions are supporting the event, including European Bioplastics, Plastics Europe, and the Renewable Carbon Initiative.
