Methanol fuel cells could help expand low-carbon energy systems by using liquid methanol that is easier to store, transport, and refuel than compressed hydrogen. The review shows that advances in catalysts, membranes, and system design are improving performance, but cost, durability, methanol crossover, and scale-up remain limiting factors for commercialization.
