Our editors have lived in organic and natural fiber clothing for years. For this guide, I tested brands with organic cotton clothing for women for a range of sizes and price points.

Breathable and lightweight, organic cotton is the type of material I’ll never say no to when I have the opportunity to refresh my wardrobe. I am a certified California girl, born and raised in Los Angeles. Right now, the days are long, hot, and sunny, and all I want to feel is light and effortless when I get dressed in the morning. Even though I am an avid vintage clothing collector, the pieces I wear daily and get the most use out of are the ones with comfortable, breathable fabrics. For me, this rarely means a thrift store find. I usually save my vintage pieces for special occasions, and my day-to-day looks are much more about comfort and simplicity. I will never say no to adding an “elevated basic” to my wardrobe, especially when the basics are certified organic. Grown without GMOs, toxic pesticides, or fertilizers, organic cotton clothing, to me, feels like the healthiest, most eco-conscious, and still fashionable option to wear daily.

Why wear organic cotton clothing?

Organic cotton is not only better for our planet and for producers of cotton clothing, but it’s healthier for consumers, too. Exposure to pesticides in items that touch our skin and what we spend most of our time in, like clothes and mattresses, can potentially cause a range of health issues — from headaches and nausea to long-term chronic illnesses, including cancer, reproductive damage, and endocrine disruption. Organic cotton clothing is also typically more durable because it retains the natural strength of cotton fibers, which aren’t weakened by harsh chemicals used in conventional farming. This means garments last longer, resist wear and tear, and maintain their softness over time. Organic cotton farming is also more sustainable, as it avoids toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, reducing soil and water contamination. By using crop rotation and natural composting methods, organic cotton farms support biodiversity, improve soil health, and use less water, making organic cotton clothing the preferred choice for the betterment of our health, wellness, and the sustainability of the planet.

What should you look for when shopping for organic clothing?

When shopping for organic clothing, look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX, which ensure that fabrics are free from harmful chemicals and produced using eco-friendly methods. It’s also important to consider ethical labor practices — brands committed to fair wages, safe working conditions, and transparency in their supply chain will often have certifications like Fair Trade or WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production). Beyond fabric, check if the brand uses low-impact dyes, plastic-free packaging, and sustainable production methods to minimize environmental impact. Choosing organic clothing isn’t just about the fabric — it’s about supporting ethical and responsible fashion from start to finish. 🌿

Our criteria:

When I had the opportunity to test a range of organic cotton clothing from a handful of different brands, I was elated. My goal was to test a variety of styles so I could get a broad read on wearing organic cotton from morning to night. Right now, I’m in a very transitional moment, and my lifestyle is certainly reflective of that. I am currently wrapping up a degree and am in the midst of recentering myself for a new chapter. It’s a time of endings and beginnings, so I wanted to pick pieces that felt versatile and could support my shift into a new era.

I curated my selects to include casual day-to-night looks, loungewear, activewear, and sleepwear. I then tested these items in several scenarios, like a day in the ceramics studio, a date night out, a morning run, and cozy evening wind-downs. Details are important, so I wanted to evaluate each piece based on softness, quality finishes, and how the clothing holds up through the wash. For reference, I am 5’7″ and normally wear a size small, although I did end up sizing up or down in a few brands for alternate fits based on size guides. (Sometimes I like a low-rise, baggier fit, especially with jeans.)

A woman sits on a blanket outdoors surrounded by folded clothes, raising one hand with a nonchalant expression.
I tested ten organic clothing brands, noting my experience with each. Here I’m wearing some of my favorite pieces from Outerknown and Baserange.

What I Ordered:

From tees and tanks to shorts and sweatshirts, MATE the Label only uses natural and nontoxic materials when crafting its apparel, like low-impact dyes, certified organic cotton, and Tencel. The company keeps its carbon footprint small, too, as its factory is 17 miles from its headquarters, meaning all pieces are sewn, dyed, and shipped from LA. The packaging is entirely made from recycled materials, and there’s a recycling program in place for old pieces. If you want comfy classics in bold yet inviting colors (plus an adorable matching kids collection), look no further than MATE.

Trixie’s Review: I love the Organic Poplin Essential Pants. They are lightweight and extremely breathable while still being structured enough to feel put together throughout the day. Pairing them with the Organic Cotton Tee, I feel these two pieces are both effortless while still extremely comfy. I noticed some slight creasing in the pants after a few wears on busy days, but if you have time for a quick steam (or even just hanging them up in your bathroom while you shower), I think they are a great essential. They also have quite a long inseam. I tend to wear my pants more low-rise, so I ended up cuffing them on my days out, but they could be styled either way.

The Organic Stretch Biker Short and the Organic Stretch Scoop Bra have also been a great addition as I recently picked up running (extreme beginner, haha). Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been wearing this set during my morning runs. The scoop bra is thick and really supportive without feeling hot or constricting, and the straps are adjustable. Both pieces have some stretch even though the overall shape is maintained. The biker shorts are a little more lightweight, which I appreciate, and they didn’t ride up during my workout. After multiple washes, they both hold their shape and color, but I would note that the Bone colorway can be a little see-through in the biker shorts since there are fewer layers of cotton fabric.

What I Ordered:

Pact is committed to creating clothes that make the world a better place. The socially conscious company goes to great lengths to ensure its entire supply chain — from the growing and harvesting of organic cotton to the final sewing of garments — is as clean and responsible as possible. And because it ships internationally, you can shop Pact from anywhere for its super-soft tees, dresses, and underwear made with pesticide-free organic cotton. BRB, going to shop!

Trixie’s Review: Pact’s clothing makes every day feel a little more luxurious. The Coastal Double Gauze Vista Set is the ideal style for an elevated loungewear look. The cotton has a nice weight to it while still being flowy, and it feels high quality. I loved this look as a set, but what I also like about the pieces is how versatile they are. I’ve enjoyed mixing and matching them with other items from my closet since they are easy to dress up or down.

The Breezy Cotton Sleep Pant and Cami are both crisp and lightweight. The best way I can describe the feeling is like getting into bed with freshly washed sheets! The print is really pretty, and I love the attention to detail with the ladder stitch on the hems of each item. They get softer with each wash, and they feel like a set I’ll continue to reach for during my evening wind-downs. If you have a smaller bust, I’d recommend sizing down on the cami if you want a less boxy silhouette.

Natural Materials | USA-grown organic cotton

Size Range | S–XL

What I Ordered:

Harvest & Mill has spent the last decade building a truly sustainable brand. Based in Berkeley, the brand uses only organic cotton grown in the US for its apparel, which is sewn in the Bay Area. That means its production has significantly fewer emissions, less energy and water use, and a shorter supply chain. The pieces themselves are perfect for lazy weekends and WFH days — from organic joggers and sweatshirts for your desk to naturally dyed socks to snuggle up in on the couch. Organic, carbon-neutral, and an investment in American labor.

Trixie’s Review: Harvest & Mill basics are soft and easy to throw on after a long day. I ordered cotton options in both lightweight and heavyweight feels to get a sense of the range. The Unisex V-Neck Tee is naturally oversized, and it has quickly become my favorite sleep shirt. I’ve been pairing the shirt with the Organic Cotton Boxers for warmer nights since they are so soft and breathable. I like a loose boxer fit when I sleep, so I sized up to a medium for extra comfort.

With the Organic Heavyweight Fleece Sweatpants, it’s safe to say these will now be my travel go-tos. The fleece is thick, buttery soft, and a great option for cooler days. I’m looking forward to wearing these on my next flight, and I love the pop of the cream drawstring, which elevates the plain black in a nice way.

What I Ordered:

Started by professional surfer Kelly Slater, Outerknown wants you to experience the great outdoors — while also protecting it. OK champions sustainable and organic materials, fair labor, and the circular economy (and aims to make 100 percent of its products circular by 2030!). If you’re not sure where to start, check out OK Ten, the brand’s best-selling pieces including a no-fuss jumpsuit, layering flannel, and a blanket shirt jacket. Made with either organic cotton or recycled cotton, these pieces are cozy, conscious, and curated for outside adventures.

Trixie’s Review: When I say I haven’t taken either pair of these jeans off — I mean it. These are the softest jeans I’ve ever worn. Crafted from organic cotton denim, these jeans have a relaxed, unisex fit. Personally, I love a low-rise, baggy look, and these are the epitome of that. The Beachcomber Relaxed Jeans are perfect for dressing up or down, day or night. I’ve been wearing the Indigo Vintage Wash during the day paired with the Sojourn Rubber Crop Tank, which is an easy throw-on. They are easy to wash, and both colorways hold up to stubborn stains. I wore the Indigo Wash pair to the ceramics studio multiple times over the past couple of weeks (which means I’m covered in clay, glaze, and dust), and each wash brought them back to life, good as new!

On nights out, the Vintage Blue Wash paired with the Sol Wrap Sweater has been a look I’ve felt no guilt about repeating. The Sol Wrap Sweater has a really nice weight, and I love the ribbed sleeve cuffs, which elevate the whole look. Both tops are pretty cropped, but what I love about the wrap sweater is that it looks super flattering layered over a longer tank if you want a bit more coverage.

What I Ordered:

Toad&Co is one of those rare clothing brands that makes it easy to look good while doing good. Since 1996, they’ve been creating comfortable, adventure-ready apparel with sustainability at the heart of every decision — from responsibly sourced materials and ethical manufacturing to lower-impact shipping practices. But their mission extends far beyond eco-friendly clothing. Through initiatives like their ToadAgain resale program, 1% for nonprofit giving, and Planet Access, which creates employment and outdoor opportunities for people with disabilities, Toad&Co is committed to making a meaningful impact on both people and the planet.

Trixie’s Review: Toad & Co has great, versatile options to accompany you on any of your day-to-day adventures. The Airscape Tank Midi Dress is quickly becoming a summer staple in my wardrobe. It’s breezy, breathable, supportive, and best of all — it has pockets! There’s an attention to detail in the stitching and accents that I appreciate. There are options for hidden customization, which come in handy with the adjustable straps, smocking in the bodice, and cinchable tie at the neckline.

I also tested the Rose Long Sleeve and Chaka Culotte Pants, which are both extremely comfortable for WFH days. The wide waistband on the Chaka Pants is perfect for folding over for a low-rise option. I wore this outfit to a yoga class and then a weekly errand run, and I felt cute and comfortable. The pants are flowy and super stretchy, which means I can wear them all day. I would size down in the Rose Long Sleeve, as I felt it fit a little looser on me than I’d prefer, but the fabric is super soft and subtly flattering with the ruched V-neck.

6. Baserange

What I Ordered:

For clean lines, simple silhouettes, and high-quality pieces, we love Baserange. The Copenhagen-based French-Danish brand’s goal is to create clothing from natural and recycled materials with the intention of being well loved and worn over and over again. From material sourcing to production, Baserange seeks innovative solutions to reduce environmental impact at every stage. They are extremely open about their processes and sourcing, and you can find an honest and thoughtful breakdown of their use of fibers, factories, production networks, dyes, and certifications on their website. Baserange also places an emphasis on the individual stories of the people who contribute to their clothing, so you can feel more connected to the pieces you are wearing. The clothing itself is unique, with delicate tops and simple bottoms that blend seamlessly into your closet while still feeling special.

Trixie’s Review: Every piece I tested from Baserange felt elevated and classy. Their designs pair so well with their use of natural fibers, which I think gives each item a special, delicate quality. I paired the Pama Longsleeve with the Undyed Kolla Pants. Even though both pieces were white, you can easily create an interesting outfit with these items because of the different textures and textile designs that Baserange uses. The Kolla Pants are a wardrobe staple that can easily be dressed up or down. They hold their shape and can be worn low- or mid-rise. I don’t own a lot of bright white clothing, but these pants make any top feel like a statement.

Both the Pama Longsleeve and Nida Tank are sewn from a fine cotton rib that is paper-thin and stretchy. Even though the fabric is thin, I felt warm and comfortable wearing these tops on a chillier night out. The Pama Top is see-through, so I would style it with a cute bra or use it to layer under another dress or shirt. I also fell in love with the Sti Slip Skirt, which is made from a sheer blend of organic cotton and silk. This skirt is also versatile in the way it can be styled. I wore the Sti Slip Skirt with the Nida Tank and black shorts underneath, which is a simple solution if you want more coverage with those special sheer pieces.

7. Industry of all Nations

Natural Materials | 100% organic cotton

Size Range | XS–XXL

What I Ordered:

Industry of all Nations recognizes the disastrous effects that poor manufacturing decisions can have on our environment. This is why their mission is not only to produce clean and sustainable clothing items but to invest in clean and sustainable industries as a whole. The brand does this by employing artisans, honoring heritage techniques, making products at the source of the raw materials, paying fair wages, using natural materials and dyes, and finally free repairs and re-dying of clothing! Their organic cotton shirts are completely pesticide-free, non-GMO, and come in a variety of vibrant, natural dyes. You’ll also find recycled cotton options as well. Clean, safe, and sustainable.

Trixie’s Review: Industry Of All Nations’ clothing is naturally dyed, unisex, and made to last. Each piece impressed me because of how lightweight and detail-oriented every item felt as I tested it. The naturally dyed Bralette in Shellac 2 is soft and conforms to the body. The pop of color comes from a natural shellac resin dye bath, and it makes this bralette something I’d like to build an outfit around outside of the house. The design features an elastic band that is comfortable to wear all day and pairs so nicely with their Pajama Pants. Both are equally soft, thin, and lightweight. As summer ramps up, I’ve been wearing this look for lounging and morning stretches in my backyard.

Both the Ponya Jacket and Drawstring Pants are great examples of versatile unisex styles that can be riffed on over and over again. The jacket is incredibly lightweight while still retaining its original structure. There’s a lot of detail that goes into each piece, from the distressed buttons to the monochrome stitching. I enjoyed this look as a set paired with the Drawstring Pants, but I also think the pieces are strong on their own. I’ve been wearing the Ponya Jacket with jean shorts and dresses as a cute, lightweight outer layer. The Drawstring Pants are what I’ve been reaching for on those evening walks when the heat burns off — I love how adjustable they are.

What I Ordered:

Beaumont Organic specializes in luxury casual pieces, most of which are made from 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton. The brand works exclusively with factories that are within the EU (Portugal and the UK), pays fair wages, and provides excellent working conditions for staff. Beaumont Organic introduces two collections a year (as well as a pre-loved collection with discounted prices). It also delivers worldwide in recyclable packaging, with free US shipping on orders over $250.

Trixie’s Review: Beaumont Organics has the answer for luxurious outfits that are simple, stylish, and hold their own. I was really impressed by the construction of each of these pieces. Every design is structured in a unique and eye-catching way. The materials feel high quality, and the silhouettes reflect an emphasis on well-fitting items that last. I tested two looks that could function day to night. The Tasmin-Sue Organic Cotton Jersey Stripe Top is breathable but weighted enough to hold its slouchy style. I paired it with the Mazu Poplin Trouser, which has a dramatic wide-leg design that appears as flowy as a skirt. The trousers felt incredibly light considering how much fabric they had and were long enough to be flowy without dragging on the floor.

I also paired the Nancy Shirt with the Cotton Denim Trousers for a simple, put-together look. The barrel-leg jeans pair well with the GOTS-certified cotton top. The tops tend to have a loose and airy fit. I’d recommend sizing down if you want a more fitted style.

What I Ordered:

Jungmaven is rooted in sustainability, creativity, and a deep love for the Earth. All of their garments are proudly cut and sewn in Los Angeles using high-quality, globally sourced fabrics — primarily blends of organic cotton and hemp — which offer a durable, breathable, and eco-conscious alternative to traditional materials. While their pieces aren’t 100% cotton, they’re intentionally designed using blends that minimize environmental impact and meet global organic standards like GOTS and OCS. The brand’s mission goes beyond clothing; they actively advocate for regenerative agriculture, fair labor, and circular fashion through their resale platform and transparent practices.

Trixie’s Review: Jungmaven encapsulates the California beachy vibe effortlessly. I immediately gravitated to the Sundance Slip Dress, which has now become my farmers market uniform. Lightweight and flowy, this organic cotton and hemp blend is the perfect option for a summer cover-up or a sunny adventure. I love the hidden pockets, how easy it is to throw on, and the bleach-yellow color. I’d note that the straps are not adjustable, so I’d take that into account when choosing a size.

As I’ve been improving my workout routine, I’ve found I’ve been lacking comfortable athletic basics. I love that the Orosi Leggings are a breathable alternative to the synthetic activewear that seems to be everywhere. I have a long torso, and these leggings easily sit high-waisted. I’ve been wearing them paired with the Spaghetti Tank, which makes for a cute set with ample coverage.

What I Ordered:

Certified B Corp Organic Basics is all about eco-friendly essentials that will last, including adult undergarments, basic tees and tanks, and cozy leggings. Born out of Denmark in 2015 (but available to ship worldwide), these sustainable basics are not only ethical but are also low on waste and impact. You’ll find their cotton collection uses either organic cotton or recycled cotton. These are perfect if you’re on the go, especially because their breathable fabrics keep you fresh wear after wear. Our kind of basics.

Trixie’s Review: Organic Basics takes comfort seriously. Each night I’ve been waiting for a respectable time to slip into the Soft Knit Straight Pants, as they are one of the softest pieces of clothing I own — even after multiple washes. I love how they maintain the straight leg silhouette while still being incredibly slouchy. The organic cotton keeps me temperature-regulated on cold and warm nights, and, paired with a more structured top like the Weekend Zip Hoodie, you can find me out for a late-night ice cream run.

The Core Butterfly Singlet and Flex Foldover Short are perfect for low-intensity workouts and hot summer days. They are both lightweight and flattering. I’ve found they provide less support than traditional activewear because they are so thin, so I’ve been wearing them to yoga or on a morning walk. I enjoy how versatile Organic Basics’ designs are; I can easily wear them all day and feel cute and unrestricted!
