I’ve tested dozens of organic pillows of various materials, sizes, shapes, and firmness over the years. These are ten standout options that are comfortable, durable, and safe to sleep on for any budget.
Pillows play an essential role in getting truly restorative sleep. Just like mattresses, the right pillow looks different for everyone. Your sleep position, body type, temperature preferences, breathing, and even how your nervous system unwinds at night all influence what will feel most supportive and comfortable.
The materials matter, too. We spend so much of our lives sleeping, breathing in the air around our bedding for hours every night. Choosing pillows made with natural, organic, and nontoxic materials can help reduce exposure to synthetic foams, chemical treatments, and other materials that come into close contact with your body while you rest.
Yet, finding the right pillow for your sleep preference can be a bit like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Test different ones until you find just the right one for your sleep preferences.
Luckily, every pillow featured below is thoughtfully crafted with high-quality, nontoxic materials, and many offer adjustable loft and support to suit all sleeping styles. We also made sure none of these pillows flattened into a “pancake” or required folding in half just to provide proper support. A well-made pillow should hold its shape, support your neck, and last for years.
Keep in mind that while these pillows may cost more upfront, they’re made with high-quality materials and exceptional craftsmanship. Our team has been sleeping on several of these pillows for more than a year, and they continue to feel as supportive and comfortable as the day they got them. Many are even washable, making it easy to keep them fresh.
Why consider nontoxic or organic pillows?
Unlike your traditional box store pillow, organic pillows are crafted from nontoxic materials, like pesticide-free cotton or chemical-free natural latex, which is a great choice for individuals who prefer organic or lower-toxicity materials as part of creating a sleep environment that may reduce exposure to certain synthetic chemicals, dyes, fragrances, or off-gassing compounds.
“Because pillows are in such close proximity to the skin and respiratory system for many hours each night, the materials they’re made from really matter…cleaner materials may help reduce unnecessary irritation and cumulative chemical exposure over time…”
-Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, board-certified family physician
“Because pillows are in such close proximity to the skin and respiratory system for many hours each night, the materials they’re made from really matter. Choosing cleaner materials may help reduce unnecessary irritation and cumulative chemical exposure over time, especially for individuals who are more sensitive,” states board-certified family physician Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino.
Likewise, pillows made from high-quality materials are often more supportive, as they are crafted for specific sleepers and offer different fill options so you can customize your firmness. Studies show that having optimal support (and temperature, for that matter) is crucial to quality sleep and overall health.
How to choose the best pillow for your sleep style:
After testing all 10 of the pillows below, one thing became clear: There isn’t a single pillow that’s right for everyone. An ideal pillow depends on how you sleep, your body frame, and the type of support you prefer. Along with which season of life you are in and how your nervous system feels. Shopping for the right pillow can feel daunting, but we are here to help.
If you’re a side sleeper, look for a pillow with a medium-to-high loft that fills the space between your shoulder and head to keep your neck aligned. Adjustable shredded latex pillows, like those from Naturepedic and Nest Bedding, make it easy to fine-tune the loft until it feels just right. If you prefer a more structured feel, molded latex designs like Coyuchi’s Turiya offer consistent support that won’t shift throughout the night.
Back sleepers typically do best with a medium loft that gently supports the neck’s natural curve without pushing the head too far forward. A latex pillow (shredded or molded) offers enough cushioning to cradle the head while maintaining healthy spinal alignment. Adjustable options like the Naturepedic Organic Adjustable Latex Pillow and Circadian Rest’s Organic Cotton Pillow make it easy to dial in the perfect amount of support, while the Birch Organic Pillow offers a balanced feel for those who prefer a pillow that’s ready to go right out of the box.
If you’re a combination sleeper, an adjustable pillow is hard to beat. Being able to remove or add fill allows you to customize the pillow as your sleeping position changes over time, making it one of the most versatile long-term investments.
Across nearly every pillow we tested, organic latex stood out for its balance of comfort, breathability, durability, and support. Unlike conventional memory foam, latex quickly springs back into shape, sleeps noticeably cooler, and maintains its loft.
What certifications do we look for in organic pillows?
When shopping for a pillow, certifications can help take the guesswork out of choosing cleaner, healthier materials. GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifies organic latex, while GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) verifies organic cotton and responsible manufacturing. If you’re considering a foam pillow, CertiPUR-US® ensures the foam has been tested for certain harmful substances and low VOC emissions, though it doesn’t mean the foam is organic.
You may also see GREENGUARD Gold, which certifies low chemical emissions for better indoor air quality, and MADE SAFE®, one of the most comprehensive certifications for screening potentially harmful ingredients.
When you combine the right pillow for your sleep style with organic cotton covers and trusted certifications, these pillows offer a thoughtful blend of comfort, longevity, and cleaner materials — helping you sleep well, feel healthier, and support a better way for the earth.
Our methodology & criteria:

I personally slept on each of the following pillows for multiple nights. I’m a side sleeper and love to feel supported by my pillow through the night and while reading before bed. I looked at how restful my sleep was with each of these pillows, noted their materials, and explored adjusting the fill when possible. I knew I liked a firmer pillow but didn’t realize how different each pillow would be based on the materials used.
My husband also got to test a few of these pillows, and it turns out we have different firmness preferences. It was a good look at how important the right pillow is for you and how different each person is. When our team selected the brands below, we considered the materials used, how the pillow will hold up over time, and the social good each brand provides. Our top picks are based on the criteria below, and we’ll continue to update this piece as favorites emerge.
- ORGANIC | Each of these brands uses non-toxic, organic materials with no off-gassing. We prioritize pillows made with materials and certifications intended to reduce exposure to certain toxic chemicals of concern, including harsh flame retardants and PFAS, where noted.
- COMFORT | Comfort is key — we have tried each of these pillows (and oh so many more!) ourselves, spent hours reading online reviews, and, of course, we review all the comments and emails from our readers. The brands on this list are here because they are organic, and we love sleeping on them. Our favorites include a variety of sizes and plushness for the stomach sleeper, avid napper, and everyone in between!
- PRICE | Each of the brands we’ve included offers a fair value for the cost of the pillow. We considered durability, longevity, and ease of cleaning.
- SOCIAL GOOD | The brands below have a variety of social-good and environmental initiatives, and we love supporting them.

Avocado’s premium pillows are the perfect complement to the brand’s natural, nontoxic mattresses. Handmade in Los Angeles, both the Grand Luxe Pillow and the Pure Talalay Luxury Pillow are GREENGUARD Gold Certified and crafted with GOLS‑Certified Talalay latex, responsibly sourced down (Grand Luxe), and organic cotton covers for a cloudlike, supportive feel. As a Certified B Corp, Avocado continues to support environmental causes, proving that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully.
Courtney’s Review: I’ve been sleeping on Avocado pillows for years and can honestly say they’re hands down the best I’ve ever slept on. For this review, I had the pleasure of trying their Grand Luxe Pillow in king size. Avocado’s most luxurious pillow — coined as “the world’s ultimate pillow.” The Grand Luxe is definitely unique. Instead of being all down or all latex, it’s a 60/40 blend of Pure Talalay latex and RDS-certified down. The latex core gives it resilience, so your head doesn’t sink straight through. While the down adds a luxurious, cloud-like softness. Avocado describes it as balancing “resilient support and airy plushness.” This pillow has become my top favorite and will remain the main character in my pillow story.

2. Earthfoam
.icons-library-acf-row {

}
Best For | Affordable support
Organic Materials | Talalay and organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium firm
Weight | 4.5 lb
For a budget-friendly pillow that doesn’t compromise on comfort or design, we look no further than Earthfoam’s squishy cloud-like pillow. It’s a dream for those of us who need extra head support — no more folding floppy pillows in half! — and we love that the brand boasts several internationally recognized certifications for fair trade, organic, safety, and emissions standards.
Courtney’s Review: I adore Earthfoam’s straightforward and funny approach to bedding and sleep. They call their pillow “a bed for your head.” Made from FSC-certified natural latex (Talalay), the pillow is springy while also supportive. It holds its shape and doesn’t move throughout the night.
I used it on a night when I had a bad pulled muscle in my neck, and it was wonderful for sleeping on my back and giving me the head and neck support I needed. There’s an organic cotton layer and a washable organic cotton outer layer, so I have peace of mind knowing I’m sleeping on organic cotton. My only complaint is that their pillow comes in only one size and fits a standard queen pillowcase. I don’t like that it’s too small for my king pillowcases. The brand also offers a 100-day trial and free returns.

3. Boll & Branch

}
Best For | Combination sleepers
Organic Materials | Ethically sourced, cruelty-free U.S. down fill and a 100% organic cotton cover
Firmness Available | Medium firm
Weight | 4.5 lb
Like all Boll & Branch bedding and bath goods, the brand’s pillow collection is ethically and sustainably made under fair trade conditions. The luxury down alternative pillow is OEKO-TEX Certified, replacing feathers and other animal by-products by using allergy-friendly PrimaLoft fibers and 100 percent organic cotton covers.
Courtney’s Review: I’ve been curious to try a down pillow and was excited to try Boll & Branch’s Down Chamber Pillow. It comes in 3 densities depending on your preferred sleep position. As someone who primarily sleeps on my side, I went with the Firm in King size. This pillow is one of my absolute favorites. It’s extremely comfortable, offering a fluffy, full feel while supporting the neck and head. For the Medium and Firm densities, the pillows are filled with a supportive feather-and-down inner core surrounded by a layer of U.S.-sourced down. This pillow is plush and offers ultimate support for the head and neck.

Best For | Neck support

Saatva wins for the most luxurious pillow on the list. And if you suffer from spine or neck pain, a few nights on this pillow may be a game-changer. It’s made in the USA with a dreamy combo of organic cotton and naturally breathable latex and is basically a five-star hotel for your head. It’s cool, cushy, and crafted with clean materials — so you can sleep easily in every sense.
Courtney’s Review: What sets Saatva pillows apart is that they come in both High Loft and Standard Loft. This means that rather than choosing your firmness level, you choose the pillow’s height. For this review, I tried the Natural Latex Pillow in High Loft. Both my husband and I are side sleepers, and their website recommends the high-loft option for that sleep position. This pillow has a natural shredded Talalay latex core, which gives it that supportive, springy feel that helps keep your head and neck aligned. Around that is a layer of soft, down-like fiber that adds a plush, cozy feel, so it doesn’t feel overly firm. Then everything is wrapped in a breathable organic cotton cover. It absolutely feels like a hotel-quality pillow, yet I found it a bit too soft for my preference.

5. Circadian Rest
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
Best For | Allergy-resistant wool
Organic Materials | FSC-certified Dunlop latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.
Firmness Available | Adjustable (firmness and loft are customized by adding or removing fill).
Weight | 3–4 lb depending on the amount of fill
Circadian Rest was founded on the idea that sleep should be supported with cleaner, more thoughtfully sourced materials. The brand offers six fill types: Organic Cotton, Organic Wool, Wild-Harvested Kapok, Buckwheat, Buckwool Hybrid, and Tree-Tapped Latex. Each pillow fill is designed to be customizable to suit support preferences. Backed by certifications like GOTS, FSC, and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Circadian Rest stands out for its commitment to transparency, quality craftsmanship, and healthier sleep.
Courtney’s Review: I adore that Circadian Rest is a small, handmade company in the US. I’m also taken with their transparency and dedication to creating quality bedding, which is evident on their website. My husband and I got to try the Organic Cotton Pillow and the Organic Wool Pillow. I slept on the wool pillow while he slept on the cotton one. For me, this ended up being my favorite pillow on the list! It’s firm enough to support my neck and head while also being incredibly soft and plush — literally the perfect support for me. My husband, however, found the cotton pillow to be too firm. Luckily, both are customizable, and after removing a good chunk of the cotton fill, he loves it.

6. Happsy
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
Best For | Guest bedroom
Organic Materials | GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium-firm
Weight | 3–4 lb
Happsy was founded with a mission to make certified organic, non-toxic sleep products that aren’t complicated or expensive. Rather than relying on synthetic foams or unnecessary fillers, the brand pairs organic latex with a soft organic cotton cover to create a pillow that’s naturally supportive, breathable, and built to last. That thoughtful approach is backed by some of the industry’s strongest certifications — including GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE®, and EWG VERIFIED® — making Happsy an easy choice for shoppers who want peace of mind alongside a comfortable night’s sleep.
Courtney’s Review: Happsy Organic Pillow is as straightforward as it gets. The brand doesn’t offer different firmness or loft options and is sold in either standard size or queen size. We have a king mattress, and our pillowcases are king, so the pillow was too small for the pillowcase, which turns out to be a real pet peeve of mine. The pillow is quite firm, and I would love it if they had more options available for different firmness levels. However, I love that the pillow is made from GOLS-certified latex and contains no toxic chemicals. I also really love the organic cotton cover that it’s encased in — you almost don’t want to cover it up with a pillowcase.

7. Nest Bedding
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;

}
Best For | Customizable fill
Organic Materials | Shredded natural latex, organic cotton cover
Firmness Available | Adjustable (firmness and loft are customized by adding or removing fill).
Weight | 3–4 lb
Struggling to break up with your memory foam pillow but searching for a more sustainable option? Nest Bedding has you covered. With more than 20k reviews, the Easy Breather Pillow is the brand’s most popular pillow and has adjustable, nontoxic and virgin foam fill (custom support and better sleep for the win). The Easy Breather even comes with a complimentary fill bag to store what you don’t use. And thanks to its unique design, this one has that cool “other side of the pillow” feel. The cooling fabric disperses heat and wicks away excess moisture.
Courtney’s Review: I decided to go out on a limb and try Nest Bedding’s uniquely designed crescent-moon-shaped Easy Breather Side Sleeper Pillow. As someone who almost strictly sleeps on their side, I wanted to experience a pillow crafted just for that position. The pillow arrives overly stuffed and is customizable. I decided not to remove any of the fill and try it as it is — especially since I like a firmer pillow. I ended up adoring sleeping on this pillow and found it to be incredibly supportive for my neck and head. I also think this pillow would be great for pregnancy sleep support.
However, I was very confused about how to put a pillowcase on it and strongly disliked the look of the pillow inside the case. I think it would be awesome if the brand made custom cases for this pillow. They do recommend using a king-size case, but the fit looked strange amongst my other pillows on my bed.

8. Birch

Best For | Cooling pillow
Organic Materials | GOLS-certified organic shredded Dunlop latex core, organic wool, and GOTS-certified organic cotton.
Firmness Available | Medium
Weight | 3–4 lb

Birch pillows are made with cruelty-free wool directly from New Zealand farmers, fabric sourced from Canada, and natural latex sourced from Southeast Asia. Assembled in the USA, these GOLS-certified pillows are cool and moisture-wicking, so you won’t have any night sweats. As a bonus, Birch donates one percent of sales to the National Forest Foundation.
Courtney’s Review: I really loved sleeping on Birch’s Organic Pillow. It’s soft, super comfortable, and it offers 360 support for my shoulders and head. I also love that the entire pillow is organic. From its organic cotton cover to its natural wool and organic latex. That said, the pillow is a medium feel and is on the softer side. Personally, I prefer a firmer pillow with a bit more height than this one offers.

9. Coyuchi
.icons-library-acf-row {
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
padding-top: 0px;

}
Best For | Side sleepers
Organic Materials | GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex core, GOTS-certified organic cotton inner cover, and a removable GOTS-certified organic cotton sateen protector
Firmness Available | Firm
Weight | 5–6 lb
Coyuchi’s Turiya™ Organic Latex Pillow, one of many Coyuchi offers, uses GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex for a fresh night’s sleep. Best for back and side sleepers, this material is breathable, resistant to mold and mildew, and biodegradable. This is also one of the only pillows on the list to come without any plastic packaging (yay!). Instead, it arrived in a canvas bag, perfect for storage and protection when we’re not using it.
Courtney’s Review: I decided to try the Turiya™ Organic Latex Pillow for its unique shape and focus on side sleepers. It has a large hole in the center and two smaller holes. I later learned they are for your ears. The pillow comes with a pillow cover that was too tight to remove to capture the foam cutouts, but here’s a video showing what the pillow looks like on the inside and why the cutouts are there. They offer two heights, standard and tall. I ordered the tall because the brand recommended it for taller sleepers or those with broader shoulders — my husband has broad shoulders, and I wanted him to experience a pillow for his body type.
I’ve only given this pillow a one-night trial, and the brand recommends trying it for at least 30 days to get used to its unique shape. But the one night I slept on it, it was much too firm and too tall for my body type. However, my husband found it to be quite supportive for his frame. We’re going to continue testing over time and look forward to it breaking in further.

10. Naturepedic

Do you toss and turn while you sleep? Do you struggle to find the right position? Naturepedic’s Adjustable Organic Pillow may be just what you need. This pillow also has adjustable latex fill, so you can easily adjust how firm it is. (It can get messy! So be cautious when you unzip it for the first time.)
Courtney’s Review: Last but certainly not least, I tried the Adjustable Organic Latex Pillow in the 2-in-1 comfort style. This pillow keeps life interesting. Not only is it made from thoughtful organic materials, but the 2-in-1 is like having two pillows. It arrived in a gorgeous case; one side is quilted, while the other is a soft, smooth cotton. I was a little confused about which side to sleep on, but with some digging, I discovered this is how it works: One side is Soft — filled with a plusher blend of shredded organic latex, allowing your head to sink in a bit more while still providing support. The other side is Medium — filled with a denser blend of shredded organic latex for a more supportive, responsive feel.
The added bonus of this pillow is its adjustability. They even send a cute little bag of extra shredded latex to add. I ended up adding almost the entire bag to give it more firmness, and I adored sleeping on this pillow. As I continue to sleep on it, I’ll explore which side ends up being my favorite.
