San Francisco Tops the Ranking
San Francisco ranks as the most expensive major metro for raising a child, with annual costs reaching $43,171.

Boston follows at $42,584, while San Jose ranks third at $41,817. These are the only three cities in the dataset where the estimated annual cost exceeds $40,000.
The gap between the top and bottom of the ranking is substantial. Raising a child in San Francisco costs an estimated $23,249 more per year than in Memphis, the lowest-ranked city at $19,922.
Western Cities Dominate the Top 10
Seven of the 10 most expensive metros are located in the West. Along with San Francisco and San Jose, the group includes Seattle, Denver, San Diego, Sacramento, and Portland. High housing and childcare costs help push family expenses higher across many of these markets.
California alone has five metros in the top 16.
Beyond San Francisco and San Jose, San Diego ranks sixth at $34,705, Sacramento ranks ninth at $33,299, and Los Angeles places 13th at $32,191. Riverside ranks 16th, with an estimated annual cost of $30,883.
Indianapolis Records the Largest Increase
Indianapolis experienced the sharpest increase, with the cost of raising a child rising 20.8% from 2025 to 2026.
Its annual total reached $32,543, placing it 12th overall and ahead of traditionally expensive metros such as Los Angeles and New York City.
Birmingham posted the second-largest increase at 13.6%, followed by Orlando at 11.8%.
By comparison, costs declined in only two metros: Richmond, where they fell 1.9%, and Virginia Beach, where they dropped 1.2%. Washington, D.C., recorded the smallest increase among cities with rising costs, at just 0.3%.
Southern Metros Remain Relatively Affordable
Many of the least expensive cities are located in the South.
Memphis ranks last at $19,922, followed by Nashville at $21,216 and San Antonio at $21,393.
Still, lower costs do not necessarily mean expenses are growing slowly. Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando all posted increases of more than 10% between 2025 and 2026.
