Ride1UP Portola 02 Review:
One of Our Favorite Folding eBikes Just Got Better

The Portola 02 replaces the original Ride1UP Portola. Ride1UP retired the first version in 2026, so if you searched for the Ride1UP Portola, the 02 is the bike you can buy today. This review covers the 02, with direct comparisons to the original we tested in 2024.

RiderGuide Verdict: The original Ride1UP Portola was already one of our favorite affordable folding eBikes, earning a spot on our Best Folding eBike lists for multiple years. The new Portola 02 doesn’t mess with that formula too much. Instead, Ride1UP addressed some of the biggest things we wanted improved: smoother torque-sensing pedal assist, more torque, better electronics, more suspension travel and a bigger battery option. Better yet, it still starts under $900.

In our testing, the Portola 02 reached 28 mph, accelerated from 0–20 mph in 5.6 seconds, climbed our standardized test hill in an above-average 12.7 seconds, and delivered 39.2 miles of real-world range.

The Original Portola Was Already Really Good

This is an important bike for us because the Portola isn’t starting from scratch.

We reviewed the original Ride1UP Portola back in 2024, and it quickly became one of our go-to folding eBike recommendations.

At the time, there wasn’t much else around $1,000 giving you a 750W motor, an 8-speed Shimano drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, front suspension and speeds up to 28 mph in one compact package. We gave it a 4.8/5 and called it one of the best-value folding eBikes we’d tested.

Its biggest weakness was also pretty obvious: the cadence-sensor pedal assist wasn’t nearly as refined as the rest of the bike.

That’s where the Portola 02 starts to get interesting.

Portola vs Portola 02: What Actually Changed?

The Portola 02 looks familiar, but this is a much more substantial update than a new display and a few cosmetic changes.

Ride1UP also redesigned the frame and upgraded the electrical system, while the new display adds better battery information, USB-C charging and substantially more control over pedal-assist behavior.

The result is a bike that feels less like a replacement for the Portola and more like Ride1UP went through our old review and started checking off the things we’d want improved.

Our Portola 02 Test Results

Specs are useful, but here’s what the Portola 02 actually did in our testing.

That hill result is especially noteworthy.

The Portola 02 completed our test hill in 12.7 seconds at an average speed of 8.9 mph, which puts it above average among the folding eBikes we’ve run up the same hill.

That backs up one of the more important spec changes. The original Portola’s motor was rated at 750W and 65Nm, while Ride1UP now rates the new AKM hub motor at the same 750W but 90Nm of torque.

It’s still a folding bike, but it doesn’t feel underpowered simply because it happens to fold.

Intui-Drive Is Probably the Biggest Upgrade

The motor is stronger, but we think the way that power is delivered is the more important improvement.

The original Portola used a cadence sensor. In simple terms, once it detected that you were pedaling, it delivered the amount of power associated with that assist level.

The Portola 02 introduces Intui-Drive, which combines torque and cadence sensing. Instead of simply knowing that the pedals are moving, the bike can respond to how much effort you’re actually putting into them.

Push harder and you get more assistance. Ease up and the bike backs off.

That’s a substantial quality-of-life improvement on a bike with this much power, particularly when you’re starting from a stop, maneuvering slowly, riding through tighter spaces or trying to maintain a natural-feeling pedal cadence.

And importantly, Ride1UP lets you switch between torque-sensing and more traditional cadence-based assist depending on how you prefer to ride.

The original Portola already had plenty of motor. The Portola 02 makes that power easier and more natural to control.

It’s Still Properly Quick

We verified the advertised 28 mph top speed in maximum pedal assist.

More impressive for everyday riding is how quickly it gets there.

Our Portola 02 accelerated from:

0–20 mph: 5.6 seconds

0–28 mph: 13.3 seconds

That’s plenty of performance for a 20-inch folding eBike and helps explain why the Portola has always felt like more than a compact last-mile bike.

You can fold it and put it in the back of an SUV, but once it’s unfolded, you’re not stuck riding around on something that feels compromised.

39.2 Miles of Tested Range

The Portola 02 is available with either a 10Ah or 15Ah battery, up from the original Portola’s 10.4Ah and 13.4Ah choices.

Ride1UP rates the 10Ah version for 25–45 miles and the 15Ah version for 30–60 miles, depending heavily on rider weight, speed, terrain and assist level.

Our Portola 02 Lite test bike returned 39.2 miles in our real-world range testing.

That’s enough range that the Portola 02 doesn’t need to be treated strictly as a short-distance folder. For a lot of riders, it can function as a primary commuter or recreational eBike that happens to have the advantage of folding when you need to transport or store it.

We’d look closely at the 15Ah upgrade if range is important to you. The extra capacity is particularly attractive for riders using the Portola for longer recreational rides, camping or RV trips where charging might not always be convenient.

Portola 02 vs Portola 02 Lite

There’s another big difference this generation: you can now choose how much utility equipment you actually want.

Portola 02 Lite

The Lite keeps the important performance hardware, including the 750W motor, Intui-Drive pedal assist, hydraulic brakes, 8-speed drivetrain and folding frame.

What it drops are some of the utility features.

You don’t get the welded rear rack, fenders or integrated rear lighting setup found on the standard model.

We’re testing the Lite, and our bike weighed 64.7 pounds on our scale.

That’s worth emphasizing because the word “Lite” can create the wrong expectation. This is still a substantial eBike, especially if you’re going to regularly lift it into a vehicle or carry it up stairs.

Spend another $100 and the standard Portola 02 becomes the more utility-focused version.

Current pricing is:

• Portola 02 15Ah: $1,095

The big additions are the 150-pound-rated integrated rear rack, fenders and integrated rear lighting/turn signals.

If you’re commuting, carrying groceries, adding panniers or generally using the Portola as a car-replacement-type bike, we’d probably spend the extra money.

If you mainly want something to ride recreationally and throw in the back of your vehicle, the Lite makes more sense.

The New Electronics Are a Big Step Forward

This is another area where the original Portola was starting to show its age.

The Portola 02 replaces the old basic LCD with a 3.5-inch color display.

It isn’t just prettier. You get more detailed battery information, adjustable pedal-assist behavior, USB-C charging and Apple Find My integration.

You can also customize how the bike delivers its assistance rather than being stuck with one factory tune.

We like this direction because customization actually matters on a high-powered torque-sensor bike. Some riders want a very natural, bicycle-like response. Others want the motor to do considerably more of the work.

The Portola 02 gives you more room to make it behave the way you want.

More Suspension Travel, Same Practical 20-Inch Format

The original Portola already impressed us by including an 80mm suspension fork at its price.

The 02 increases that to 100mm of front travel with hydraulic lockout.

It’s still riding on 20 x 3-inch tires, so you retain the compact dimensions that make this bike practical while getting a little more help taking the edge off rough pavement, expansion joints and broken-up paths.

No, it’s not a full-suspension trail bike.

But for a compact folder built primarily for pavement, commuting and light recreational riding, it’s a useful upgrade.

How the Portola 02 Compares to Other Folding eBikes

Sub-$1,000 folders are crowded now, so it helps to know what the alternatives actually deliver.

Lectric’s XP4 is the obvious rival. The base 500W XP4 is $999 and the long-range 750W version with the 17.5Ah pack is $1,299. We got 25.6 miles out of the long-range XP4 riding throttle only, and it earned its spot on our best folding electric bikes list. But the Portola 02 Lite undercuts the base XP4 by $104 and adds torque sensing, which no XP4 trim offers.

Shopping lower, the GOTRAX eFold is $499 and we tested it to 15 miles. It tops out at 20 mph off a 374Wh battery, so it is a different class of bike. It also costs about half as much.

In practice, the Portola 02 slots between the cheap folders and the $1,500 crowd. Intui-Drive is the piece none of the others match at this price. If you want the wider view, our Ride1UP lineup guide covers where the Portola sits against the rest of the brand’s bikes.

Who Is the Portola 02 For?

The Portola 02 makes the most sense when storage or transportation is one of the reasons you’re shopping for an eBike in the first place.

It’s particularly compelling for RV owners and campers. Fold it down, put it inside your RV or storage area and you don’t necessarily need to add a large external bike rack just to bring your eBike on a trip.

The same applies to anyone who wants to carry an eBike inside a car or SUV. Folding it lets you load it into a cargo area, then unfold it and have a genuinely quick 28 mph eBike when you reach your destination.

Apartment and condo riders also benefit from the smaller storage footprint, as do people whose garage is already fighting for space with a car, tools, lawn equipment and everything else.

The big caveat is weight.

Our Lite test bike weighed 64.7 pounds, so folding does not automatically mean lightweight. If you’re buying one specifically because you intend to lift it into an SUV every weekend, we’d pay just as much attention to that number as the folded dimensions.

Who Is It NOT For?

If your number-one priority is having the lightest possible eBike to carry up multiple flights of stairs every day, we’d look elsewhere. The Portola folds compactly, but our test bike is still nearly 65 pounds.

Likewise, if you never intend to fold or transport your bike, a full-size commuter may give you a roomier riding position and larger wheels without requiring the extra hinges and compact frame.

And if maximum cargo capability is what brought you here, skip the Lite and go straight to the standard Portola 02. The integrated rack and fenders make that version much better suited to daily utility use.

We don’t want to waste your time: buy the Portola 02 because you actually benefit from a bike that folds.

Did Ride1UP Make the Portola Better?

Yes.

And what’s most impressive is that Ride1UP didn’t lose sight of why we liked the original.

The first Portola was affordable, quick, compact and unusually well equipped for its price. That’s why it remained one of our favorite folding eBikes for multiple years.

The Portola 02 keeps those strengths, then improves many of the areas that mattered most.

You get a 90Nm motor instead of 65Nm, dramatically better Intui-Drive pedal assist, a redesigned frame, more suspension travel, a larger available battery, much better electronics, Find My integration and two versions to choose from.

And our testing shows the performance is there too: 28 mph, 0–20 mph in 5.6 seconds, an above-average 12.7-second hill climb and 39.2 miles of real-world range.

Most importantly, it still starts at $895.

The original Portola was already really easy for us to recommend. The Portola 02 feels like Ride1UP took a proven folding eBike and upgraded the things that actually improve the ownership and riding experience rather than just changing it for the sake of releasing something new.

If you want a folding eBike for an RV, apartment, cramped garage or the back of your car or SUV, the Portola 02 belongs near the top of the list again.

Ride Safe

Wear a helmet, check your local eBike class rules before you ride, and charge the battery on a hard surface away from anything flammable. The Portola 02 is UL 2849 certified and its battery is UL 2271 certified, but a certification is not a substitute for charging it sensibly.
