Safety is key when it comes to livestock handling, according to Tim Prior from Grazing Meadows Wagyu in Brussels, Ont.
Prior conducted a product demonstration of the Arrowlock 75 Series squeeze chute from Arrowquip at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock, Ont., on Sept. 15.
WHY IT MATTERS
The best livestock handling equipment is the one that is easy to use and safe for both operator and animal.
He said he has been using the Arrowquip livestock handling products on his operation for more than 15 years.
“Using this product, you feel totally safe. To me, I have sort of three reasons we support this product. First, it’s safe for the person using it. Two, is it safe for our livestock, our cattle? It’s amazingly safe for them. Nothing gets hurt going through it,” Prior said during the demonstration.
“And number three, does it do everything we want it to do and more? Yes, it does more than what I even use it for. So to me, those are the things I’m looking for when I’m buying a piece of equipment.”
Farmer-friendly features
The system on display was the 7508 system with the 7500 series chute, an eight-foot cattle tub and eight-foot Easy Flow Alley section.
The entire system is fully portable, allowing producers to move it around their operation or even move it from farm to farm.
The fully adjustable alley can fit a variety of animal sizes from large bulls to small calves, with a rubber floor cutting down on noise and keeping animals more calm.
The top and bottom access doors in the chute give users plenty of safe and convenient options for access to the animals.
A wireless scale system and load bars installed underneath the alley eliminate issues with livestock chewing or stepping on wires and causing damage.
The system on display was equipped with the Gallagher W-1 weigh scale, with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility, plus a sleep mode means users do not have to turn the system on and off after each use.
Systems constantly evolving
Prior said working with Arrowquip over the years has been great because of their willingness to work with their customers to continually improve their products.
“If we want any changes or any adaptations, we take it to them, and if it makes sense, they do the adaptation,” he said.
“So they tweak the unit all the time, and as they move along they just keep getting a better and better product all the time.”
Arrowquip is based in Woodlands, Man., and their livestock handling systems are used all over Canada, the United States and Europe.
