The Deterra® Drug Disposal Pouch has picked up several packaging industry awards. The pouch is made with 50% or more I’m greenâ„¢ bio-based polymer.

Developed by Verde, the patented pouch deactivates unused medications. This prevents drug diversion. It also reduces the risk of pharmaceuticals leaching into groundwater and waterways.

The bio-based polymer comes from renewable sugarcane. It lowers the packaging’s carbon footprint compared to fossil-based polyethylene, while matching the technical performance pharmaceutical disposal requires.

Accredo Packaging manufactured the pouch using bio-based polyethylene instead of relying solely on conventional plastics. The company, backed by the API Group, drew on decades of experience in film design and engineering to incorporate the biomaterial into a high-performance flexible structure. The result shows that biobased content and functional performance don’t have to compete.

“These awards are a testament to how I’m greenâ„¢ bio-based portfolio enables our partners to meet the most rigorous technical standards and their sustainability commitments,” said Andres Prince, key account manager at I’m greenâ„¢ bio-based. He added that integrating renewable materials into a product as critical as the Deterra® pouch shows the bioeconomy transition is already underway. Braskem supplies the biobased polyethylene resin used in the pouch.

The Flexible Packaging Association awarded the pouch a Silver Award for Packaging Excellence and a second Silver Award for Sustainability. PAC Global gave it an Award of Distinction for Technical Package Design.

The recognition highlights growing momentum behind biomanufactured materials in sectors where performance standards are strict. As bio-based polymers continue proving themselves in demanding applications like pharmaceutical packaging, they’re reshaping expectations for what sustainable materials can deliver.
