Protect More Than the Lock
A lock slows a thief down. A GPS tracker, insurance and taking the battery inside cover the rest. Register your lock and your bike’s serial number so you can file a claim or a police report if it is stolen. See our picks for ebike safety and protection gear.
Best eBike Locks on Amazon: Quick Picks
eBike Locks Compared: Rating, Type and Weight
Sold Secure is an independent UK lab that attacks locks with real tools and grades them Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond. Diamond is the top rating. Weight matters too, since you will carry this lock every ride.
How We Picked These Locks
We have not cut these locks ourselves, so nothing here carries an RG Score. We ranked them on independent Sold Secure ratings first, then the brand’s own security rating, then weight. Every pick is sold on Amazon, so returns are easy.
An ebike changes the math. A $2,000 bike with a removable battery is a bigger target than a $400 commuter, so we skipped cable locks and thin shackles and only kept locks we would use on a 70 lb ebike parked in a city. For the rest of your theft plan, read our guide to GPS tracking for ebikes.

Best Overall:ABUS Granit XPlus 540
Buy on Amazon · Under $150 →Available on Amazon
The Granit XPlus 540 is the lock we would buy first. Its 13mm shackle has a square, parabolic profile, and the shackle, housing and locking parts are all made of specially hardened steel. ABUS adds its Power Cell design to resist hammer blows and a pick resistant XPlus cylinder.
Sold Secure rates this 230mm version Diamond for pedal cycles and Gold for powered cycles, the top grade for bicycles. On paper, it is practical too: it weighs 1,500 grams, about 3.3 lb, and the 230mm shackle clears most ebike frames and a rack. You get two keys, one with a built-in light, plus a code card for replacements.

Best Anti-Grinder:Hiplok D1000
Buy on Amazon · Under $350 →Available on Amazon
The D1000 is the lock for bikes that sit outside for hours. Hiplok calls it the first portable bike lock built to resist an angle grinder, the battery tool most bike thieves now carry. Its 32mm shackle uses a material designed to wear out cutting discs. It also carries Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond and ART 4 star ratings, the top grade from both labs.
It is heavy for a U-lock at 4.25 lb, and the 92 by 155 mm locking area is small, so check it fits your frame and your usual rack. You get three coded keys you can replace and a lifetime warranty when you register it. In practice, that weight is easy to justify on a $3,000 ebike.

Best Folding:ABUS Bordo Granit XPlus 6500
Buy on Amazon · Under $250 →Available on Amazon
The Bordo Granit XPlus 6500 is the best folding lock we found. It folds into a compact block that rides in a holder on your frame, then opens to 120 cm, which reaches around posts and thick racks a U-lock cannot. That reach helps with the fat tubes on a lot of ebikes.
Its bars are 5.5mm hardened steel joined with special rivets, and ABUS gives it a 15, the top of its own security scale. Sold Secure rates it Gold. The XPlus cylinder is made to resist picking. It will not stop a grinder, and it does not pretend to.
Why we like it
- ✓ Sold Secure Gold
- ✓ ABUS level 15
- ✓ 120 cm reach
- ✓ Frame holder included
- ✓ Pick resistant cylinder
Keep in mind
- − Costs more than a U-lock

Best Value:OnGuard Pitbull STD
Buy on Amazon · Under $100 →Available on Amazon
The Pitbull STD is the best value on this list. It uses a 14mm hardened steel shackle, thicker than our top pick, and OnGuard’s X4P mechanism locks that shackle on four sides to fight prying and twisting. Sold Secure rates it Diamond for pedal cycles, the same grade as locks that cost twice as much.
The inside measures 115 by 230 mm, roomy enough for a fat ebike tube and a rack. OnGuard coats the shackle and crossbar in rubber so it will not scratch your paint, and it includes five laser cut keys and a mounting bracket. OnGuard does not list a weight on its product page. Expect a solid lock rather than a light one.
Why we like it
- ✓ Sold Secure Diamond
- ✓ 14mm hardened shackle

- ✓ 5 keys
- ✓ Bracket included
Keep in mind
- − No listed weight

Best Chain:ABUS Granit CityChain XPlus 1060
Buy on Amazon · Under $250 →Available on Amazon
The Granit CityChain XPlus 1060 is the chain for the garage, the apartment bike room or a long day parked in a big city. The 170 cm version on Amazon uses 10mm hexagonal links of specially hardened steel inside a sleeve that protects your frame. The chain locks straight into a hardened lock body with ABUS Power Cell protection.
ABUS rates it 15, the top of its bike lock scale, and Sold Secure rates the 1060 Gold. The catch is weight. At 3,750 grams, about 8.3 lb, most riders will leave it where they park every night instead of carrying it. That length wraps a bike and a post at the same time, which a U-lock cannot do.
Why we like it
- ✓ Sold Secure Gold
- ✓ ABUS level 15
- ✓ 10mm hex chain
- ✓ 170 cm reach
- ✓ Sleeve protects paint
Keep in mind
- − 8.3 lb

How to Lock an eBike So It Stays Put
Lock the frame, not the wheel, to something that cannot be cut or lifted. A bike rack bolted into concrete is best. A small sign post is not, because a thief can unbolt the sign and slide the bike off the top.
Fill the U-lock. The less space inside the shackle, the harder it is to fit a jack or pry bar in there. Take the battery and display with you when you can, and use a second lock or cable on the front wheel. Our guide to locking an electric scooter covers the same habits with photos.
Two different lock types can slow a thief down more than one bigger lock, since a thief carrying bolt cutters for a chain may not have the tools for a U-lock too.
How to Choose an eBike Lock
Start with where the bike sits and for how long. A five minute stop and an overnight street spot need different locks.
- Check the rating: Sold Secure Gold or Diamond is the level we would want on an ebike. Brand scales like ABUS’s 1 to 15 and Kryptonite’s 1 to 10 help too, but they only compare locks from that one brand.
- U-lock, folding or chain: A U-lock gives the most security per pound. A folding lock reaches around thicker posts. A chain wraps anything, but a strong one is too heavy to carry every day.
- Angle grinders: Most regular locks, even Diamond rated ones, fall to a battery angle grinder given enough time. If your bike sits in a high theft spot, pick a grinder resistant lock like the Hiplok D1000.
- Size matters: A smaller U-lock leaves less room for a pry bar. Measure your frame tube and your usual rack before you buy.
- Carry it: A lock you leave at home protects nothing. Pick one with a frame bracket or holder, or keep the heavy chain where the bike lives.
- Know the categories: Sold Secure grades pedal bikes and powered cycles separately. A lock can be Diamond for bicycles and Gold for powered cycles, like the ABUS Granit XPlus 540.
