In order to build accountable teams, it’s also very important for leaders to ensure everyone understands the big picture.
Notably, the biggest gap in perceived importance between high- and poor-performing organizations was around “helping their team understand the organization’s business context”. This suggests that leaders at underperforming companies spend less time educating their team on the opportunities and strategic challenges in their industry.
Professionals also underscored the importance of preparing team members to handle tough situations. It’s important for leaders to strengthen team resilience and create safe spaces for constructive debate. Both of these behaviors were judged to be very important for accountability on an individual level as well.
How Leaders Can Take Action
High-performing organizations don’t just develop strong leaders. They build teams that operate with alignment and shared discipline to help them execute faster on their priorities.
This research demonstrates that there are specific, actionable steps leaders can take to create an environment of accountability. When team members get clarity, have a high-level view of the company’s context and strategy, and are equipped to handle tough situations, they are better able to take ownership together.
