React Foods, a bio-based spinout from Aarhus University, has entered the gas protein space with a biotech platform built on cross-institutional research. The Danish biomanufacturer is commercializing work developed with Stanford University, the University of Tübingen and the Novo Nordisk Foundation CO2 Research Center.
The company has secured a 4.2 million kroner, or about $645,000, convertible loan from Bioinnovation Institute, a biotech accelerator funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. React Foods will use the funding to develop and scale its microbial fermentation technology, converting carbon dioxide and hydrogen into biomanufactured yeast proteins.
The bioprocess feeds microbes on CO2 and renewable hydrogen, converting them into acetate. That acetate then feeds yeast in a second fermentation step, generating a protein-rich biomass. The biomass still requires further bioprocessing into ingredients before it can enter food products.
React Foods is targeting the egg and whey protein markets, positioning its biomass as a bio-based, vegan alternative amid rising prices and supply shortages in both sectors. CEO Michael Martin said the goal is to build a sustainable, land-independent protein source less exposed to weather and geopolitical disruption.
The company will scale its biomanufacturing process at a pilot plant at AU Viborg, Aarhus University’s research campus. The facility is designed to test the full bioproduction system as one integrated process, generating data to guide future scale-up and industrial partnerships.
Lars Ottosen, head of the university’s Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, said connecting individual bioprocesses into an efficient, industrial-scale biomanufacturing system is the next challenge for CO2-to-food technology.
React Foods joins a growing field of gas protein biomanufacturers, including Solar Foods, Unibio, Biosphere and others working to commercialize fermentation-based, biobased proteins from carbon dioxide.
