Which Album Was America’s Biggest Each Year?
Key Takeaways
- Only five artists have topped the annual list more than once since 2000: Taylor Swift, Adele, Eminem, Drake, and Morgan Wallen.
- Taylor Swift’s four appearances span 16 years, from Fearless in 2009 to The Life of a Showgirl in 2025.
- Adele’s 21 is the only album in the dataset to lead in two consecutive years, topping the list in both 2011 and 2012.
At the turn of the millennium, NSYNC’s No Strings Attached was America’s best-selling album, moving nearly 10 million copies in 2000. Twenty-five years later, Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl led the year with 5.6 million album-equivalent units.
Between those two albums, the music industry underwent a major transformation as digital downloads and then streaming changed how Americans consumed music. Using data from Luminate via Business Insider, this visualization tracks the best-selling album in the U.S. for every year from 2000 to 2025.
America’s Best-Selling Album Every Year Since 2000
Because the way music is consumed has changed substantially over this period, later figures include album-equivalent units, which express other forms of music consumption in album terms.

Pop and rap appear frequently across the timeline, but the annual winners extend well beyond those genres. They include Linkin Park’s rock album Hybrid Theory, Josh Groban’s Noël, the High School Musical soundtrack, Morgan Wallen’s country albums, and Bad Bunny’s Latin album Un Verano Sin Ti.
Blockbuster Albums Look Different in the Streaming Era
Some of the largest annual totals on the list are concentrated in the early 2000s. NSYNC’s No Strings Attached sold 9.9 million copies in 2000, while Eminem’s The Eminem Show reached 7.6 million in 2002, 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ reached 6.5 million in 2003, and Usher’s Confessions reached 8 million in 2004.
By the 2010s, many annual leaders posted totals between roughly 2 million and 4 million. However, figures across the full timeline are not directly comparable with traditional album sales because, as streaming grew, industry measurements increasingly incorporated album-equivalent units to capture consumption beyond purchases.
The shift is also visible in a different kind of album leaderboard. Visual Capitalist’s ranking of Spotify’s most-streamed albums of all time shows how today’s biggest releases can accumulate tens of billions of streams.
More recently, annual leaders have again posted larger totals. Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time reached 5.4 million in 2023, while Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department approached 7 million in 2024.
Adele’s 2015 Album Stands Out
One album breaks sharply from the pattern of the mid-2010s. Adele’s 25 reached just over 8 million copies in 2015, more than double the total of Taylor Swift’s 1989, which led the previous year with 3.7 million.
Adele had already topped the annual list twice with 21. The album led with 5.8 million copies in 2011 and another 4.4 million in 2012, making it the only album in the dataset to lead in two consecutive years.
Together, those appearances give Adele three years at the top of the list.
Taylor Swift Has Led the Year Four Times
Taylor Swift appears more often than any other artist in the dataset. Fearless led in 2009 with 3.2 million copies, followed by 1989 in 2014 with 3.7 million.
A decade later, Swift returned to the top with The Tortured Poets Department, which recorded nearly 7 million copies in 2024. The Life of a Showgirl followed with 5.6 million in 2025.

Several other artists have repeated at the top. Eminem led in 2002 and 2010, Drake in 2016 and 2018, and Morgan Wallen in 2021 and 2023. Across the full 26-year timeline, however, Swift is the only artist with four separate years at number one.
