Mazda has ruled out plug-in hybrid power for its new-generation CX-5, directing buyers seeking greater electrification towards the CX-60 PHEV and electric CX-6e instead.

The CX-5 will offer petrol power before adding a conventional hybrid, although Australian timing for the latter remains unconfirmed.

Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi says the brand’s SUV range provides alternatives across different powertrains, prices and sizes.

“No (plug-in hybrid) in the CX-5. We’ve got it in the CX-60,” he says.

The decision means Mazda won’t directly match Toyota’s approach of offering both conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid power in the RAV4.

Instead, electrification will help distinguish Mazda’s three SUVs: the CX-5 will cater for petrol and conventional hybrid buyers, the CX-60 offers a plug-in option, and the CX-6e provides the fully electric alternative.

The CX-6e has attracted more than 2000 expressions of interest, according to Mazda.

Bhindi says Australian allocation for the CX-5 hybrid will follow its global introduction, but has stopped short of confirming an arrival date.
