I’ve reviewed some of the best organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly mattresses on the market. These are my family’s picks for an organic twin mattress.

Sleep is top of mind for every parent, myself included. It plays an important role in nervous system regulation, immune health, learning, mood, recovery, and overall development. While a mattress is only one part of the equation, creating a supportive sleep environment may help contribute to better restorative sleep and long-term wellbeing. Dr. Nora Fahdan, a pediatrician in California, emphasizes the importance of sleep in a child’s development: “Sleep is so important for their physical health, their brain development, and their ability to regulate their emotions.” Quality sleep in children starts with a mattress that supports healthy growth, proper posture, and overall well-being.

We know that choosing a mattress that fits your home, budget, and values can be an extensive process — so we’ve created this guide to help you narrow down the most eco-friendly, sustainably made, and non-toxic options. Whether you’re shopping for your kids, in need of a smaller mattress for yourself, or building out a guest room, these brands have safe and comfy options for more restorative sleep.

Why are organic and nontoxic mattresses important, especially for kids?

“Children, teens, and young adults spend a significant amount of time sleeping during important stages of growth and development, which is why many families are becoming more thoughtful about the materials used in their sleep environment,” says Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician and functional practitioner. “While perfection isn’t realistic, choosing products made with lower-emission and more transparent materials can be one meaningful way to support overall wellness and indoor air quality.”

“Children, teens, and young adults spend a significant amount of time sleeping during important stages of growth and development, which is why many families are becoming more thoughtful about the materials used in their sleep environment.”

-Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, board-certified family physician

Organic and nontoxic mattresses are essential for kids because they provide a healthier sleep environment and have a higher likelihood of containing fewer harmful chemicals like flame retardants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in traditional mattresses. These chemicals can off-gas and pose health risks, especially to children, whose developing bodies are more vulnerable. It’s important to note that it’s difficult to medically guarantee whether a mattress is “100% nontoxic.”

Organic mattresses, made from natural materials like organic cotton and latex, are the better option as they offer better air quality, reducing the risk of allergies and respiratory issues, while helping contribute to better sleep quality for children. Natural materials like organic wool and latex are also highly breathable, helping to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, which keeps kids comfortable throughout the night. This can lead to deeper, more restorative sleep, which is crucial for their physical and cognitive development. They also provide comfort and support crucial for growing bodies while being environmentally friendly, thanks to the use of natural and organic materials.

It’s important to note that while we’ve listed these mattresses as nontoxic, what we mean is that they’re made with lower-emission, more consciously sourced materials and designed with safer material choices in mind. Certifications and material transparency can help parents feel more confident that they’re choosing one of the safest possible sleep surfaces for their little ones to spend upwards of 8-12 hours per day.

What are the relevant certifications?

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This certification ensures that textiles are made from at least 95% organic fibers and processed without toxic chemicals. It also covers social criteria like fair wages and safe working conditions.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): GOLS applies specifically to latex foam and guarantees that it is at least 95% organic and processed without harmful additives.
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: This certification tests all components of the mattress for over 1,000 harmful substances, including heavy metals and pesticides, ensuring the mattress is safe for human health.
  • GREENGUARD Gold: GREENGUARD Gold indicates that a mattress has low chemical emissions, promoting healthy indoor air quality — especially important for children’s products.
  • MADE SAFE®: This certification confirms that the mattress is made without known toxic chemicals, including flame retardants and PFAS, making it safer for both people and the environment.

How to choose a twin mattress for your little one:

Choosing the right twin mattress for your child involves balancing comfort, support, and safety. First, consider firmness: Children generally need a medium-firm mattress that provides proper spinal support while still feeling comfortable, as overly soft mattresses can increase the risk of suffocation or poor posture. Materials are another key factor — look for organic or non-toxic options like GOTS-certified cotton, GOLS-certified latex, or mattresses free from flame retardants. Breathable, hypoallergenic fabrics can help regulate temperature and reduce allergens, which is especially important for kids with sensitivities. You’ll also want a mattress with durability to withstand years of jumping, playing, and growth, and one that is easy to clean or has a removable, washable cover.

Finally, certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE®, or OEKO-TEX® can provide peace of mind that the mattress is safe for your child’s health and indoor air quality. By considering firmness, materials, and safety certifications, you can choose a twin mattress that supports healthy sleep and overall well-being for your little one!

The Good Trade readers surveyed

Our editors have personally slept on, researched, corresponded with brands, and read thousands of customer reviews to select the best organic, nontoxic, and supportive twin-sized mattresses for you and your family. I personally tested each mattress on this list with my daughter’s help and made notes on which were the easiest to move, which were malleable enough to change the sheets with ease (and not scrape my knuckles on the frame as a result!), along with specific safety specs and sustainability credentials. Each mattress is pictured on the Classic Day Bed from Thuma in our guest room.

  • ORGANIC | The brands on this list boast certifications like GOLS to ensure they’re natural, organic materials like latex, wool, cotton, and/or down.
  • NONTOXIC | All of the options on this list are free of harsh flame retardants, and all are designed to reduce exposure to certain chemicals of concern, including some flame retardants, adhesives, or VOCs, depending on the brand and certifications.
  • SUPPORTIVE | These mattresses are supportive and durable — not only will they last, but they’ll also offer you more restorative sleep.

My Green Mattress’s Kiwi Organic Kids Mattress is a high-quality organic mattress designed for kids and is hypoallergenic and MADE SAFE certified. Handcrafted in Illinois with up to 704 pocketed coils and a GOLS certified organic latex layer, it’s cozy and supportive while remaining free from flame retardants, polyurethane foams and other toxins.

This twin was my personal favorite mattress for its plush, yet supportive comfort, and I chose to keep it in our own house for the nights when it gets too crowded in our bed and one of us heads into the spare room for some extra space to finish our snooze. This mattress will last well past childhood with its 20-year warranty. I’ll note that this was one of the heaviest on the list and did not include side handles. I begrudged this while moving it around repeatedly for this review, but its safety specs and comfort won out, and I’m so glad we kept it. For a twin mattress that is truly considered farm-to-bedroom, look no further than Avocado. The brand sustainably harvests its own wool, latex, and rubber on farms they manage in the USA. Every mattress is non-toxic, organic, and eco-conscious — no chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams here! The collection includes vegan, latex, and hybrid mattress options. Plus the brand offers a 100-day sleep trial so you can test it out.

We’ve had our pair of Avocado twin mattresses for over a year, and I will always sing their praises for how aligned the brand is with our family’s safety and sustainability values. I’ve personally been to their factory here in Southern California to see how they’re made, and spent time with the team that steers the brand toward quality and integrity. My only note to consider with this mattress is that it is dense for its size and tends to be heavier than other brands, which can be noticeable if you rearrange your furniture often or change the sheets frequently.

Naturepedic’s organic kids’ mattresses are perfect for your child’s first bed, with their 2-in-1 transition bed featuring a waterproof side for potty training and a quilted side for long-lasting comfort. Made with GOTS-certified organic materials and a waterproof layer from non-GMO sugarcane, this mattress contains no harmful chemicals, adhesives, or polyurethane foam. Plus, it’s highly versatile and suitable for bunk beds, platform beds, and some trundles, making it a smart, long-term investment for your child’s growing needs.

Naturepedic’s sustainability and safety certifications are hard to beat, and I tend to recommend their mattresses the most to new parents. Our first crib mattress was from Naturepedic, and it lasted through two babyhoods, subsequent toddlerhoods, and was then passed onto another family with lots of life left. The price tag reflects their high standards, but if you’re in this for safety and longevity, you’ll get your money’s worth. My favorite part of the twin is that one side is waterproof, which means you can skip the three-figure mattress protector expense. We decided to keep this one and have already put the waterproof side to good use when one of our mattress protectors wasn’t dry in time for bed.

PlushBeds Healthy Child Organic Latex Mattress is a kid-sized version of their award-winning Botanical Bliss mattress, made with organic materials like GOTS-certified cotton and wool, plus GOLS-certified latex. It’s gentle yet supportive, hypoallergenic, and totes certifications like GREENGUARD Gold and Eco Institut.

I like to think of this mattress as the “boneless” option, because no matter what I tried, this twin would not stand upright! While this made it tricky to photograph, it was the easiest on the list to maneuver. So whether you’re moving this mattress solo or have to change the sheets frequently, its flexibility makes both tasks easy and comfortable (I have never found changing the sheets so easy as I have with this mattress due to its malleability).

While not a perfect fit, our PlushBeds twin squishes down enough that we chose to use it for the kids’ trundle. And if at the end of your research you still aren’t sure if this twin is right for you, PlushBeds makes it easy to try with their 100-night sleep trial, free shipping, and a 25-year warranty.

The Juniper Kids Mattress from Brentwood Home is a comfy and durable choice for kids with a low 6-inch profile, perfect for bunk and trundle beds. Made with GOTS-certified organic cotton and CertiPUR-US® certified foams, it’s free from many harmful chemicals like flame retardants and phthalates, making it a safe and hypoallergenic option. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold and Climate Neutral certified for low emissions and sustainability.

In addition to its impressive safety certifications, this mattress is one of the most affordable and versatile options on the list, and features a cooling gel memory foam layer made with plant-based BioFoam for added comfort and support. This is a great option for any child who sleeps warm, or for a guest room that accommodates folks with different sleep preferences. It’s also proudly made in Los Angeles, making it a local option for those of us who live on the West Coast and want to reduce emissions with lower travel miles.

The mattress also has sturdy, individually wrapped coils for full support and is free from fiberglass and allergens. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold certified to promote a nontoxic sleep for restless kids!

This twin was also at the top of my list for parents who end up spending a lot of time lying with their kiddos, and felt surprisingly light for its size. The brand does a nice job of balancing safety certifications and price point. Bear also sells a 360-degree encasement that provides complete protection from spills and accidents, which is a unique offering I hadn’t seen before from any other brand. And if you’d like to give it a test run before fully committing, you’ll receive a 120-night trial and lifetime warranty.

Awara keeps it clean and simple, offering two new mattress choices available in twin sizes — the Classic Hybrid Mattress and Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress. Both are made with GOLS & FSC-certified organic latex, organic wool, fiberglass-free design, and thick-gauge edge support coils for a perfect balance of cooling comfort and spinal support. For those looking for a little extra comfort, the Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress has a Eurotop construction for extra support.

I reviewed the Classic Hybrid option, and it felt luxurious even without the luxury upgrade. I found myself wanting to lie on it without even putting sheets on top because its quilted wool top layer was that soft. This option also features side handles to ease the moving process, which are necessary as this is one of the heavier twins in this roundup. Awara also provides the option to add a protector, sheet set, and cooling pillow for only an additional $199. After reviewing non-toxic bedding for the last three years, I can attest that you truly cannot beat that!

Our Pick | Saatva Youth Mattress

Saatva’s twin mattresses are handcrafted, eco-friendly, and made to order in the USA. When shopping on Saatva for the right mattress for your home, you can easily filter by firmness level and your ideal sleep materials, such as memory foam or latex. As a way to help eliminate packaging, the brand even delivers its mattresses straight from the factory to your house! Our Saatva twin arrived in just a thin plastic case for protection and no need to arrange for excess cardboard disposal. This twin was the only one that arrived hand-delivered and fully unfurled rather than rolled up in a box – no inflation time necessary.

The reversible mattress is made for kids ages 3–12, helpfully noting the firmer side for ages 3–7, and the opposite, more plush side for ages 8 and up. This mattress is one of the heavier twins on this list, but the side handles help make moving it manageable. We passed this one onto my brother-in-law, who actually chose it for his own comfort as he is often the one lying with their three-year-old before bed.

For those who prefer memory foam mattresses but want to avoid toxic materials, check out Leesa’s GREENGUARD Gold certified Kids Mattress. Certified non-toxic by CertiPUR-US®, Leesa’s mattresses ensure peace of mind with their use of safe materials. It’s perfect for kids transitioning to a bigger bed, with a low-profile design that fits well in bunk beds. Plus, you get free shipping, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year warranty — all made and assembled in the USA.

Made with a responsive memory foam top layer and a soothing secondary foam, this supportive mattress is designed to support growing joints. It’s also the lightest and easiest to move on the list, which I appreciated during this review process. I’d recommend it for that alone.

Due to its flippable design, the Birch Kids Natural Mattress offers Firm support for younger sleepers aged 2-7, and plush comfort for kids 8 and up. Instead of using standard chemicals like fire retardants, Birch uses organic wool, which is well-known for its temperature-regulating qualities.

Due to its lower profile, this twin was one of the easiest to maneuver. The balance between its weight and structure made it possible to move entirely on my own, fit nicely in my car without having to fold down the seats, and would be a great fit for anyone who finds themselves frequently solo parenting or relocates often. Birch also offers organic mattress pads to complete your child’s bed, and is available in twin and XL in case you need extra length, making it an excellent option for new college students, too.
