From Michigan farms to markets across Latin America and the Caribbean, family-owned Freeland Bean and Grain Inc. has built an international business around one of the state’s signature crops. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development named the company its 2026 Agriculture Exporter of the Year, recognizing its success in expanding overseas markets and creating economic opportunities for Michigan farmers.

MDARD Director Tim Boring presented the award Aug. 12 at the company’s Freeland facility, crediting the team’s “commitment to opening new markets for Michigan’s producers, creating economic opportunities for Michigan farmers and helping strengthen communities across our state.”

Founded in 1983, Freeland Bean and Grain buys and sells corn, soybeans, soft red wheat and edible black beans. Since entering international markets in 2005, the company has expanded exports of Michigan-grown black beans to seven countries: Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

In 2025, black bean exports accounted for 25% of the company’s annual sales, with all exported beans grown in Michigan.

Behind that growth are investments in international relationships, processing capabilities and market development. Through its partnership with Jack’s Bean International, the company receives logistical, regulatory and overseas marketing support. It also joined Michigan’s delegation to SIAL Paris in 2024, showcasing its products to international buyers.

The recognition is particularly significant for Michigan, the nation’s leading producer of black beans and second-largest producer of edible dry beans. It also illustrates how state-led export promotion can help agricultural businesses reach new customers and generate demand for American-grown products.

Freeland Bean and Grain’s success reflects the broader value of international trade for U.S. agriculture, connecting family-owned businesses and local producers with markets around the world.

NASDA commends MDARD for its continued support of Michigan agricultural exporters.
