AMSilk’s bioengineered silk protein yarns have appeared in Balenciaga’s 55th Couture Collection. The German biomaterials company announced the collaboration on August 4.
An evening cocoon gown used an AMSilk-blend fabric. The design featured in Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut couture collection for the house. It follows AMSilk’s first appearance in Balenciaga’s Spring 2026 collection.
AMSilk produces its materials through precision fermentation. The company decodes and reengineers proteins found in spider silk. These proteins are then converted into wet-spun filaments.
The resulting yarn is fully protein-based. It is also biodegradable and free of microplastics. Despite its biological origin, the filament works with standard textile processes, including knitting, weaving, dyeing and finishing.
Ulrich Scherbel is Chief Operating Officer Premium Filaments at AMSilk. He said the gown’s prominence in the collection marks a meaningful milestone for the company. He noted that haute couture has always demanded exceptional craftsmanship and extraordinary materials. According to Scherbel, this latest application validates AMSilk’s technology and shows the growing potential of biotechnology-enabled materials in luxury fashion.
The collaboration reflects a broader shift in luxury fashion. Designers are increasingly seeking scalable, sustainable alternatives to conventional fabrics, including traditional silk. AMSilk’s bioengineered yarns aim to meet that demand without compromising on quality or aesthetics.
