Avantium, a leader in renewable and circular polymers, has signed a conditional agreement with Hoogesteger, a Dutch producer of fresh cold-pressed juices. Hoogesteger will buy 100% plant-based, recyclable PEF (polyethylene furanoate) from Avantium’s FDCA Flagship Plant. The PEF will be used for bottles containing juices made from fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
Avantium’s PEF, branded as releaf®, is entirely plant-derived and fully recyclable. It provides a sustainable packaging option that reduces reliance on fossil-based plastics. Releaf® offers a much lower carbon footprint than traditional plastics like PET, glass, or aluminum. Its oxygen barrier is ten times better than PET, helping to extend the shelf life of fresh juices.
The plant-based PEF bottles will be available at Albert Heijn, the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, once the plant is operational. This is the third PEF product for Albert Heijn, following collaborations with Royal Vezet and Refresco. The partnership underscores Avantium’s commitment to sustainable packaging and Hoogesteger’s dedication to eco-friendly innovation.
Charles Arentsen, CEO of Hoogesteger, said: “Partnering with Avantium to introduce plant-based PEF bottles aligns with our mission to deliver high-quality, sustainable products. We believe these bottles will keep our juices fresher longer while reducing environmental impact.”
Bineke Posthumus, Commercial Director at Avantium, added: “We are proud to expand our partnership with Hoogesteger. The plant-based releaf® demonstrates the versatility and sustainability of our material. Together, we can offer consumers more eco-friendly choices and support the circular economy.”
Avantium is currently building the world’s first commercial FDCA plant in Delfzijl, producing 5 kilotons of FDCA, the key ingredient in releaf®. Sales are expected to begin in the second half of 2025. The company plans to scale production to 100 kilotons and beyond through licensing, enabling large-scale, plant-based manufacturing of FDCA and releaf®.
