The Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) has announced six funding opportunities for UK engineering biology and bio-based companies. BBIA does not fund or run the programmes. It is sharing them with the sector. Together they offer nearly £30 million.
First to close, on 14 October, is the Engineering Biology for Defra and FSA competition. Innovate UK is offering up to £3 million through Contracts for Innovation. Phase 1 contracts are worth up to £200,000 including VAT and last up to nine months. Any UK organisation can apply.
The £5 million Access to Infrastructure Pilot closes on 21 October. UK SMEs can apply for projects costing £200,000 to £750,000 over up to 24 months. Funding covers up to 70%. Projects need a UK organisation with scale-up and validation facilities. Eligible work includes biocatalysis, engineered biomaterials and metabolic engineering.
Collaborative R&D Round 3 offers £8.5 million and closes on 3 November. Projects must be business-led, cost £750,000 to £2.5 million and run 12 to 36 months. Each needs at least one UK SME claiming grant funding and a named end-user organisation for supply-chain validation.
UK-Germany Collaborative R&D has £2.4 million and closes on 1 December. UK SMEs must partner with an independent German SME applying via ZIM. Grants of £100,000 to £350,000 cover up to 70% of costs.
Investor Partnerships Round 1 has £8 million and closes on 2 December. UK SMEs can request £250,000 to £2 million for a 24-month project. Funding reaches 45% for micro and small firms and 35% for medium ones. They must also secure private investment of at least twice the grant.
The UK-Singapore CR&D 2026 call offers up to £3 million in UK funding and closes on 16 December. Engineering biology is within its frontier technology scope. UK firms need an independent Singapore partner and can request £100,000 to £900,000.
