Belgian AgTech company Biotalys has moved a step closer to registering its biofungicide EVOCA in California, after the state’s pesticide regulator opened a public consultation phase on the product.

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) launched the 30-day comment period following a positive conclusion from its Human Health Assessment Branch, which found that Biotalys’ submitted data supports registration. The public comment window closes on 26 July, after which CDPR is expected to progress toward a final decision in the second half of 2026.

“The start of the public consultation by the CDPR marks an important and encouraging milestone in the regulatory review of EVOCA in California,” said CEO Carlo Boutton. He noted that the positive human health assessment reinforces confidence in both the company’s data package and its AGROBODY protein-based technology platform.

California is the largest agricultural state in the US, producing strawberries, tomatoes and grapes at significant scale. Biotalys considers it a key target market for its biocontrol pipeline.

The company received its first US state approval for EVOCA in Florida earlier this year. California would mark a second and strategically more significant registration.

EVOCA is a protein-based biofungicide developed using Biotalys’ AGROBODY platform. The company positions it as part of a new generation of biological crop protection tools designed to offer growers effective alternatives to conventional fungicides.

Boutton said progress in California brings the company closer to offering growers tools that can help make food production more sustainable. He described the milestone as strengthening Biotalys’ ambition to reach farmers in key markets worldwide.
