Biotech Open Platform has officially inaugurated its industrial biotechnology facility in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The site aims to solve one of the biggest hurdles in green chemistry by helping bio-based innovations transition from laboratory trials to full-scale commercial production.
Advanced fermentation uses engineered microorganisms such as yeasts, bacteria, microalgae, and fungi as cellular factories. These biological systems convert renewable feedstocks into high-value functional proteins, targeted enzymes, cosmetic ingredients, and bio-based materials. Despite promising lab results, many biological breakthroughs stall before reaching commercial distribution due to a lack of specialized pilot infrastructure.
The new €20 million site directly addresses this bottleneck. Located within Michelin’s Innovation Park, the facility features integrated fermentation lines with capacities reaching up to 15 cubic meters. It also includes semi-industrial downstream purification systems tailored for bio-based production. The platform meets strict food-grade manufacturing standards, allowing partners to validate processes and produce sample batches for real-world application testing.
The initiative was established as an open-access model by Danone, Michelin, DMC Biotechnologies, Crédit Agricole Centre France, Clermont Auvergne Innovation, and Greentech. It operates with dedicated independent teams to safeguard client intellectual property. Support from the European Regional Development Fund and local government bodies helped fund the initial build.
By providing shared access to advanced fermentation equipment, the platform reduces capital barriers for start-ups and industrial firms. Platform leadership emphasizes that combining high-volume equipment with deep technical expertise helps developers de-risk bioprocesses faster.
Ultimately, the facility aims to strengthen European biomanufacturing capabilities. Replacing fossil-derived inputs with bio-based alternatives relies on scaling these biological processes efficiently. The site is now fully operational and welcoming its first industrial scaling projects.
