Braskem, the largest polyolefins producer in the Americas, has teamed up with Balsam Hill, a leader in holiday décor, to introduce the world’s first Christmas trees made from bioplastic. This partnership highlights a significant step toward more sustainable holiday decorations, aligning with Balsam Hill’s reNEW™ commitment to eco-friendly materials. The collaboration exemplifies how the plastics industry is evolving to meet consumer demand for environmentally responsible products.

One of Balsam Hill’s recent offerings, the Aspen Silver Fir™, features trees made with Braskem’s innovative I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene derived from sugarcane. For the 2025 holiday season, the company expanded this approach to include existing trees like the Alpine Balsam Fir and Calistoga Ornament Tree, using bioplastic for their needles. Each needle contains 95% bio-based carbon, verified through C14 testing, providing a natural look while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Mac Harman, CEO of Balsam Hill, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with Braskem enables us to offer beautiful, durable, and sustainable holiday trees. We’re leading the way in integrating eco-friendly materials into festive traditions.” The move reflects the company’s efforts to lower its carbon footprint by adopting recyclable, plant-based plastics.

Braskem’s Walmir Soller highlighted the significance of the partnership. “Celebrating our 15th anniversary of I’m green™ bio-based PE, we’re excited to collaborate with Balsam Hill to bring more sustainable choices to consumers. Our materials are made from sugarcane and are fully recyclable, supporting lower emissions and circularity.”

This collaboration marks an important step toward sustainable holiday décor, demonstrating how innovative materials can combine performance with environmental responsibility. Both companies are committed to advancing eco-friendly manufacturing in the seasonal décor market, offering consumers greener holiday options.
