Domtar‘s packaging mill in Kingsport, Tenn., delivers containerboard products. By partnering with Maintech and implementing its Dryer Section Passivation (DSP) technology, the mill has recently elevated its performance to set a new benchmark for reliability, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

While its products were already outperforming market benchmarks, the mill identified opportunities to further optimize machine efficiency and reliability. By way of example, sheet breaks in the dryer section, caused by sticky deposits, were negatively affecting machine uptime and winder productivity.

Maintech’s DSP technology, comprising chemical products, spray equipment and application methods, prevents deposition on dryer cans, fabrics, fabric rolls and calender rolls, addressing issues that can compromise machine performance. The passivation application results in the mitigation of ‘stickies’ deposition on paper machines.

Key features of DSP technology including preventing deposits on dryer section components, reducing sheet breaks and the need for manual cleaning and improving winder throughput and machine reliability.

Domtar Kingsport conducted a DSP evaluation for a machine that produces 600,000 tons per year of recycled liner and corrugated medium paper grade, operating at 1,900 to 4,500 ft per minute. Key benefits were achieved, as the technology eliminated manual cleanings of the first dryer doctor blade, reduced deposition related to dryer can and felt-related sheet breaks by 40% and improved operational efficiency.

Two DSP applications were installed after a dryer section audit was conducted. Each treated surface improved dramatically, sheet breaks were reduced and frequent cleaning of the doctor blades and dryer felts was no longer needed. Increased machine speed boosted production, while reductions in steam consumption lowered energy costs. Safety was also improved.
