Today, June 8th, we are celebrating the world’s oceans by highlighting our saltwater aquarium here at the Vankley Museum. Our tank is home to a variety of fascinating marine vertebrates and invertebrates from around the globe, providing visitors with a glimpse into the incredible diversity of the ocean.
This year’s World Oceans Day theme, “Reimagine,” encourages us to rethink our relationship with the ocean and recognize how each of us are connected to it. The ocean provides many of the essentials we need to live, including the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, and countless jobs that support communities around the world. It is also a vital source of minerals, energy resources, and even medicines that improve human health. Although we live in West Michigan, we are still deeply connected to and dependent on the ocean in our everyday lives. From the products we use to the air we breathe, the ocean plays a critical role in sustaining life and supporting our global economy.Â
While the ocean is essential to life on our planet, it faces many challenges. Global fish populations have declined due to overfishing, and many large fish species have experienced dramatic population reductions. Coral reefs, which provide critical habitat for countless marine species, are also declining due to warming oceans, pollution, and other human impacts. Additionally, the ocean absorbs about 25–30% of the carbon dioxide produced by human activities, helping to slow the effects of climate change.
This World Oceans Day, take a moment to appreciate our oceans and consider small actions you can take to help protect them for future generations. Together, we can reimagine a healthier future for our planet.

Stop by the Vankley Museum to take a peek at what life under the ocean looks like! While you’re there, try our ocean-themed scavenger hunt and see if you can find all the exciting creatures hidden throughout our saltwater tank.
