Cemvita, a U.S.-based industrial biotechnology firm, signed an engagement agreement with Invest RS. This formalizes plans to establish a facility in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, dedicated to producing FermOil
, a sustainable oil used as feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The plant will also manufacture FermNPK
, an innovative biofertilizer supporting regenerative agriculture practices.
Rio Grande do Sul’s acting governor Gabriel Souza expressed confidence, stating, “The state takes another important step toward becoming a global reference in innovation and bioeconomy.” This project highlights Brazil’s commitment to becoming a leader in sustainable development and circular bioeconomy initiatives.
The agreement confirms Cemvita’s intention to install a low-carbon oil production facility in the state, positioning Rio Grande do Sul as a global hub for innovation in the bioeconomy. The facility will produce oil derived from crude glycerol, a waste byproduct, which will then be used to produce SAF. Additionally, it will generate FermNPK
, a biofertilizer that promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
This will be the first industrial-scale plant worldwide to operate using this specific bioconversion technology. The project positions Rio Grande do Sul at the forefront of the energy transition, impacting aviation, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors directly.
Moji Karimi, Cemvita’s CEO, stated, “Brazil, especially Rio Grande do Sul, aligns perfectly with our strategic vision.” He highlighted the region’s infrastructure, regulatory environment, and feedstock availability as critical to scaling their waste-to-value platform. The facility represents a major technological leap, integrating sustainable aviation fuel with bio-based agricultural inputs.
This pioneering project will showcase the potential for circular bioeconomy solutions on a global scale. It underscores Brazil’s leadership in advancing decarbonization and sustainable industrial development through innovative biotech technologies.
