Key Takeaways

  • The number of EV charging points in the U.S. grew from 15,000 in 2013 to an estimated 193,000 in 2024, more than a 12-fold increase in just over a decade.
  • By 2030, the U.S. is expected to reach about 550,000 charging points, with an average of 58,000 new chargers added each year.

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain traction in the U.S., the charging infrastructure to support them is racing to keep pace.

EV chargers are the critical piece in the EV ecosystem to enable more widespread adoption and everyday usability.

This visualization is part of Visual Capitalist’s VOLTage Week, sponsored by Tema ETFs. It visualizes the number of EV charging points in the U.S. by year from 2013 to 2024, with a forecast for 2030 using data from the IEA and J.P. Morgan.

EV Chargers in the U.S. Have Surged Since 2013

In 2013, the U.S. had just 15,000 EV charging points. That number has skyrocketed to 193,000 by 2024, and by 2030 the U.S. is forecasted to have 550,000 EV chargers installed across the country.

The data table below shows the total number of installed EV chargers in the U.S. every year from 2013 to 2024, along with a forecast for 2030:

Year EV Charging Points in the U.S.
2013 15,000
2014 20,000
2015 32,000
2016 39,000
2017 46,000
2018 61,000
2019 77,000
2020 98,000
2021 113,000
2022 129,000
2023 160,000
2024 193,000
2030F 550,000

The surge of the past decade has been fueled by growing EV adoption as more companies enter the market, government incentives, and infrastructure programs aimed at reducing range anxiety and supporting green transportation.

EV Chargers’ Rapid Growth from 2020 to 2024

The growth in EV chargers has steadily accelerated since 2013, however since 2020 the number of added chargers each year has consistently been in the tens of thousands.

2020 was the first year where more than 20,000 chargers were added, with 21,000 added, and then between 2022 and 2024 alone, the U.S. added 80,000 new chargers.

The Road to 2030

Projections show the number of EV chargers in the U.S. reaching 550,000 by 2030. To meet this target, the U.S. will need to install roughly 58,000 new chargers annually.

While the annual installed average is around 16,100 since 2013, since 2020 the average is around 23,200.

While this is far off from the 58,000 figure, growth is expected to continue accelerating, and is essential to meet EV driver demand across the country.
