Danish biogas covers a day of gas use

Denmark reached a notable energy milestone on July 4. Domestic biogas production matched the country’s total gas consumption for a full day. It marked the first time this year that renewable gas output was enough to cover national demand, according to industry group Biogas Danmark.

The gas comes from organic material that would otherwise go to waste, including manure, straw, food scraps and crop residues. Inside sealed digesters, microbes break this material down without oxygen producing digestate. The gas is then cleaned and upgraded so it can flow into the same pipelines used for natural gas.

Denmark already has meaningful infrastructure for this process. By April, 60 biogas plants were connected to the national gas grid, and roughly 23 billion cubic feet of biogas entered the network in 2025. Because biogas and natural gas share the same pipelines, the July milestone reflects a national accounting balance rather than every burner running purely on renewable gas.

The result built on a strong spring. Biogas supplied 51% of Danish gas use in April and nearly 70% in June, well above the roughly 40% average across the year. As demand fell during the low-heating summer months, production and consumption briefly crossed.

Lars Kaspersen, CEO of Biogas Danmark, said full annual coverage is achievable over the long term. Fossil gas will still be needed once colder weather returns.

The environmental benefit is strongest when biogas captures methane from manure and food waste that might otherwise escape into the atmosphere. Digestate can also return nutrients to farmland. The International Energy Agency notes that methane leakage from agricultural biogas plants can range from 2% to 5.5%, making leak detection and equipment maintenance important to preserving the climate benefits.

Denmark aims to make all gas green by 2030, though government projections now put full coverage closer to 2035, citing permitting delays and rising gas demand.
