Driventic launches VEDS 2.2 electric drive system for commercial vehicles

Driventic has launched the VEDS 2.2, an electric drive system aimed at commercial vehicles from medium-duty trucks to heavy-duty buses and coaches. The company built it as a more compact and lighter development of its integrated VEDS system, and offers it for both new vehicles and retrofit projects.

The system packages three main components, connected directly to one another, into a single unit: a high-speed EVO 390 motor, a new inverter and a single-stage planetary gear unit. An electrically powered oil pump with an integrated oil filter handles lubrication and cooling for the motor and gear unit. The complete drive unit weighs 275 kg, and Driventic optimized its torque-to-power ratio for heavier vehicles.

To simplify vehicle integration, Driventic reduced the vehicle-side interfaces to a minimum. The motor holds the cooling-water connections, the inverter the power and signal cables and the gear unit the KITAS sensor signal connection. The drive unit mounts to the non-drive side of the motor and to both sides of the gear unit through flange surfaces with threaded holes, and a KV180 output flange links the gear unit to the vehicle axle. An IP6K9K rating suits the harsh operating conditions of commercial vehicle duty.

Because the rear axles from conventional diesel-powered vehicles can be used without modification, Driventic positions the VEDS 2.2 as a basis for retrofit projects that avoids new investment in axle technology and reduces system costs. On the vehicle side, operation requires only suitable high-voltage and 24 V batteries and a low-temperature refrigerant circuit with an air-water heat exchanger.

The VEDS 2.2 builds on the VEDS 1.5, which Driventic has sold since 2025. That earlier system combines a drive inverter system (DIS), an integrated diagnosis and management unit (DMU) and an automotive-grade connector system, delivers peak output up to 390 kW and, according to the company, complies with automotive cybersecurity standards based on ISO 21434.

“Our new VEDS 2.2 enables the simple electrification of various vehicle segments, including MD trucks. We aim to appeal to the global commercial vehicle market with as broad a portfolio as possible, and to further advance the shift to electric mobility in the entire vehicle fleet,” said Manuel Calero, Senior Vice President Product Management at Driventic.
