MELBOURNE — 10 July 2026. Energy Dome, a leading provider of innovative capacity solutions, has entered an official partnership with SEC, a state-owned renewable energy company, to develop the state’s Victoria’s first long-duration energy storage project at the company’s new innovation precinct in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley.
At 10 hours, the 20 MW/200 MWh CO2 Battery plant will be the longest-duration grid battery in the state, more than double the roughly four-hour duration of any battery operating in Victoria today.
As Victoria moves toward its clean energy targets by 2030, that duration delivers the firm capacity the Victorian grid needs. The CO2 Battery also delivers what most batteries cannot: physical, mechanical inertia and a full set of grid services that will reinforce overall system strength and security as coal and gas generators retire across the state.
The project’s location, in the Latrobe Valley, is deliberate. The plant draws on the same industrial skills the region’s workforce has built over generations, from steel fabrication to rotating equipment and high-pressure systems, offering a direct pathway for skills transfer, local jobs and supply-chain participation, and it uses existing substations and transmission rather than building this infrastructure from scratch.

The CO2 Battery technology is a closed-loop thermo-mechanical system built only from steel, water and CO2. There’s no lithium, no rare earths, and so no critical-mineral supply-chain exposure. This is proven, not conceptual: Energy Dome has developed a technology platform built around its CO2 Battery that has been delivering firm, dispatchable capacity at full grid scale since 2025. With projects underway in countries including the United States, Italy, Ireland and India, Energy Dome’s global pipeline now exceeds 30 GWh+. That global momentum is underscored by a multi-year framework agreement with Google to deploy Energy Dome capacity across its data center locations worldwide.
SEC is the ideal partner and offtaker for Energy Dome, and, thanks to this agreement, it will be able to unlock the firming capacity that Victoria’s grid increasingly needs; its purpose-built Innovation Precinct is the perfect stage to do so. The partnership also reinforces Melbourne as the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters.
Claudio Spadacini, Founder and CEO of Energy Dome, said:
“Partnering with SEC is a defining moment for Energy Dome in Australia. Victoria needs firm, dispatchable capacity for long hours, not just short peaks, and our CO2 Battery delivers exactly that: 10 hours of clean, around-the-clock power, with no lithium and no critical minerals. To do it in the Latrobe Valley, with a public partner as committed as SEC, means putting world-leading, reliable technology to work where it matters most, strengthening the grid and creating skilled jobs in a community that has powered Victoria for generations.”
Chris Miller, Chief Executive Officer, SEC, said:
“SEC is excited to work with Energy Dome to develop this technology right here in the Latrobe Valley. Long-duration energy storage will play a foundational, system-level role in Victoria’s future energy system, firming variable renewable generation (from wind and solar) to deliver the around‑the‑clock reliability of supply that’s needed to power our homes, businesses and communities.”
