The non-profit organization Energy Vision recently recognized leaders in the biogas industry with Leadership Awards for their efforts in food rescue, organic waste utilization, and methane emissions reduction. The winners include companies and individuals making significant contributions to sustainability and the circular economy.

Divert, Inc., a U.S.-based company, was honored for its innovative infrastructure that rescues and distributes edible food while converting food waste into renewable natural gas (RNG) and organic fertilizer. The company has partnered with major retailers like Kroger, Albertsons, and CVS, facilitating the donation of 14 million meals and processing over 3.3 billion pounds of non-donatable food. Divert plans to build 30 plants across the U.S., serving 80% of the population within 100 miles of each site.

Cummins, Inc. received recognition for its X15Nâ„¢ engine, the first 15-liter compressed natural gas engine designed for heavy-duty and long-haul trucking. This engine can be powered with RNG, offering fleet operators a sustainable and high-performance alternative. David King of Cummins emphasized that the engine meets the demands for power, torque, and reliability while supporting environmental goals.

FedEx Freight was also awarded for its commitment to sustainability by integrating trucks equipped with the X15Nâ„¢ into its fleet and fueling them with RNG. Joe Oleson of FedEx highlighted the importance of matching the right truck, route, and fuel for efficiency and environmental benefits.

EnviTec Biogas AG, a German leader in anaerobic digestion, was recognized for operating over 90 digesters worldwide, including a flagship facility that captures methane and produces RNG, bio-LNG, and agricultural fertilizers. Lars von Lehmden showcased how their full value chain demonstrates a circular economy.

Durwood Zaelke, president of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, emphasized that reducing methane emissions is the fastest way to curb near-term global warming, urging for mandatory mitigation measures to protect the planet.
