Industrial innovation is increasingly shaped by the ability to turn scientific knowledge into practical solutions. From artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing to new materials and medicaltechnologies, research and technology organizations play an important role in helping industries adapt, become more competitive and respond to changing societal and environmental needs.

Across the WAITRO Global Innovation Family, members are contributing to this transformation in very different ways. They are building local manufacturing capacity, supporting companies in adoptingemerging technologies and developing solutions that create new pathways from research to market.

This Member Roundup highlights four examples of how research is shaping the future of industry around the world.

Strengthening Local Manufacturing in Uganda

The Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) is expanding opportunities for local manufacturing by introducing advanced production technologies for cosmetics, textiles and medical consumables.

The new facilities provide researchers, entrepreneurs and SMEs with access to technologies that can help transform innovative ideas into market-ready products. By strengthening the infrastructure availablefor product development and manufacturing, UIRI is supporting local value creation and helping build stronger industrial capacity in Uganda.

Bringing Artificial Intelligence into Manufacturing

In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) is helping manufacturers translate the potential of artificial intelligence into practical applications.

Solutions ranging from intelligent quality inspection and AI-powered production monitoring to robotics demonstrate how digital technologies can be integrated directly into manufacturing processes. By supporting companies in adopting these technologies, HKPC is helping improve productivity and efficiency while strengthening their competitiveness in an increasingly technology-driven industrialenvironment.

Advancing 3D-Printed Prosthetics in the Philippines

Advanced manufacturing can also create new possibilities for healthcare. In the Philippines, the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) is developing innovative nanocomposite filamentsfor 3D-printed prosthetics.

The technology demonstrates how materials research and additive manufacturing can come together to make high-quality medical devices more accessible. At the same time, developing these capabilitieslocally strengthens the connection between scientific expertise, manufacturing and societal needs.

Scaling Sustainable Materials from Lab to Industry

In Belgium, VITO is working with Belgian company Vlastic to advance a circular, flax-based biomaterial for applications in the construction sector.

The collaboration focuses on optimizing, standardizing and certifying the material, helping it progress from technological development towards wider industrial application. By connecting research expertisewith the needs of industry, the partnership demonstrates how technology transfer can accelerate the commercialization of bio-based materials and contribute to more sustainable production.

Turning Scientific Expertise into Industrial Impact

From Uganda and Hong Kong to the Philippines and Belgium, these initiatives address different technologies, sectors and local needs. Yet they share an important objective: ensuring that research does not remain in the laboratory but contributes to practical solutions that industries and communities can use.

Together, they demonstrate the diverse ways in which members of the Global Innovation Family are strengthening industrial resilience, accelerating technology adoption and creating pathways from scientificknowledge to real-world application.

By connecting research, technology and industry across borders, WAITRO members are helping shape a more innovative, resilient and sustainable industrial future.
