Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL), an Indian biorefinery company, has partnered with Synthomer to develop bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived monomers used in chemical manufacturing.

The collaboration addresses growing customer demand for more sustainable raw materials. Through the partnership, Synthomer is commercializing bio-based butyl acrylate using bio-based butanol produced by GBL. Butyl acrylate is a key building block in various chemical products.

The initiative aims to help accelerate the industry’s transition toward renewable raw materials. By replacing petroleum-based feedstocks with bio-based alternatives, the partnership seeks to reduce carbon footprints across the chemical value chain.
Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries, emphasized that sustainability is central to the company’s business strategy and innovation focus.

“By leveraging renewable feedstocks and our integrated biorefinery capabilities, we aim to work with and support our partners and customers in transitioning away from fossil-based materials,” he said.Somaiya noted that partnerships like this are essential for accelerating green chemistry adoption and building a more circular chemical industry. The company positions the collaboration as part of its broader vision to advance sustainable manufacturing.

Chris Brown, Vice President of ESG at Synthomer, said the partnership enables the company to offer customers a lower-carbon alternative to fossil-based monomers. This helps clients meet emissions targets while addressing demand for sustainable solutions.

Brown highlighted that expanding access to bio-based options strengthens portfolio resilience and supports evolving customer needs. The partnership reflects Synthomer’s commitment to customer-centric innovation.
