Henkel Adhesive Technologies has formed a strategic partnership with Swedish chemical company Sekab to transition from fossil-based to bio-based raw materials in adhesive manufacturing.

The collaboration centers on replacing conventional ethyl acetate with a sustainable, bio-based alternative derived from renewable sources. The initiative supports Henkel’s sustainability objectives while maintaining product performance standards for industrial adhesive applications.

Henkel plans to integrate the bio-based materials as drop-in solutions in existing product formulations. This approach allows customers to adopt more sustainable options without requiring changes to manufacturing processes or equipment. The company stated the partnership aligns with its strategy to help customers meet climate targets while reducing its own environmental impact.

Elodie Picard, Head of Sustainability for Henkel’s Packaging division, described the collaboration as reflecting a commitment to innovation that delivers environmental benefits alongside high-performance solutions.

Sekab specializes in producing fossil-free chemicals using bio-based ethanol as its primary raw material. The company manufactures products including ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid for industries such as packaging, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Production takes place at facilities in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.

Adam Lindholm, Head of Sales and Business Development at Sekab, emphasized that the partnership demonstrates how bio-based chemicals can integrate into existing value chains without performance compromises. He noted the collaboration aims to accelerate movement toward a fossil-independent chemical industry.

The partnership represents part of Henkel’s broader corporate sustainability strategy, which includes advancing circular solutions and reducing carbon emissions across operations. Henkel has positioned itself as pursuing leadership in sustainable adhesive technologies within industrial markets.

Both companies framed the collaboration as an example of value chain cooperation to scale sustainable raw materials commercially.
