HyveGeo, an Abu Dhabi-based startup, has been named one of four winners of the FoodTech Challenge during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The company was selected from a pool of ten finalists out of 1,215 submissions from 113 countries. This recognition highlights its innovative approach to land restoration.
The FoodTech Challenge aims to identify and support promising agri-tech solutions. Its goal is to boost food production and reduce waste in climate-stressed and arid areas. Organized by the UAE Presidential Court’s International Affairs Office and Tamkeen, the competition is supported by the Gates Foundation and other partners.
Founded in 2023, HyveGeo will share a USD 2 million prize. It will also receive support for research, pilot projects, market access, and incubation. This assistance will help the startup expand from the UAE’s innovation ecosystem to global markets. Past winners have gone on to secure international deals and scale their solutions.
HyveGeo’s mission is to turn agricultural waste into nutrient-rich biochar. The biochar is enhanced with microalgae, which speeds up soil regeneration from five years to just one month. The company aims to restore 10,000 hectares of land and remove one million tons of CO₂ by 2035. Their work supports sustainable farming and climate resilience.
Founder and CEO Abdulaziz Bin Redha called the win a strong validation. “It fuels our commitment to deploy solutions faster and improve food security in arid regions and the global south,” he said. “This support will help us expand our operations and strengthen partnerships with stakeholders.”
HyveGeo joins other winners across Asia, Africa, and South America. Previous winners have raised over $48 million and launched more than 50 pilot projects.
