I’ve personally reviewed the best nontoxic pots and pans on the market — these are my favorite PFAS-free options that are safe, easy to clean, durable, and make mealtime delicious.

After a summer of travel and eating out, I got home in late July, ready for a healthy reset. I was truly feeling physically exhausted and less than my best, so I knew what was in order: A month of solid self-care. I canceled upcoming plans and dedicated the next four weeks to eating at home, daily walks, getting on a consistent workout routine, and going to bed early. And wow, do I feel transformed! I’m reminded how powerful the basics are, especially the power of cooking at home with whole ingredients.

Plate of cooked white beans mixed with sautéed leeks, seasoned with black pepper. A wooden spatula and metal fork are on the plate.
A delicious recipe for Miso Leeks with White Beans that I prepared using one of the pans in this review.

In truth, I never feel good after restaurant food. Whether it’s the complex ingredient list or the mystery oils, I unmistakably feel 100% better when I eat home-cooked meals. I can listen to what my body is in the mood for and opt for simpler dishes with less inflammatory ingredients — and who knows what kind of cookware the restaurants are using, and whether it’s free of toxic chemicals or PFAS.

So when I had the chance to dive into cooking for self-care with eight new (to me!) cookware brands, I really enjoyed it…and feel better for it! Even when friends have asked me to go to dinner on the weekends, I’ve diverted our hangouts to walks instead, in favor of cooking at home! From grilling up a simple piece of fish for myself, to making eggs for breakfast, to cooking filet mignons with my bestie to celebrate her move across the country, to making my new on-repeat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Miso Leeks with White Beans, I’ve used these pans for three meals a day over the last few weeks.

They are all remarkably nonstick, wash easily, and a lot of them are dishwasher safe! Though, I personally think most things will last longer if you don’t dishwash them, so I’ve been towel drying instead. And I feel so much better cooking with pans that I know won’t flake off any toxic chemicals or coating into my meals.

What’s the issue with conventional cookware?

If you’re anything like us, you might be noticing the wear and tear on some of your most-used cookware. No big deal, right? Well… if it’s that nonstick coating starting to peel off inside your pan, it actually might be a big deal — and worth replacing sooner rather than later. Most conventional nonstick coatings are made from so-called “forever chemicals,” more formally known as PFAS (pronounced PEE-fahs).

Two of the most common members of this chemical family are PFOA and PFOS. These per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances aren’t just used in cookware; they show up in everything from pizza boxes and period underwear to moisture-wicking activewear. You might know them best under one of their most famous brand names: Teflon.

According to the American Cancer Society, the PFOA used in the process of making Teflon has raised concerns about its potential to cause cancer. Beyond that, studies suggest PFOA exposure can impact immune system function and even affect fertility in humans. So while that flaking pan might look like a minor inconvenience, it could actually be leaching harmful chemicals into your food and your home. That’s why switching to nontoxic, PFAS-free cookware is such an important and empowering upgrade — for both your health and the health of the planet.

What materials should you look for in nontoxic cookware?

When it comes to choosing nontoxic cookware, the materials you pick are just as important as the recipes you create. Look for options like stainless steel, which is durable, non-reactive, and perfect for everything from searing veggies to simmering sauces. Cast iron is another classic favorite — naturally nonstick when properly seasoned, it’s incredibly long-lasting and even adds a bit of iron to your food. Enameled cast iron offers the same heat-retention benefits but with an easy-to-clean, non-reactive coating. 100% ceramic cookware is a fantastic choice, too, since it’s free from heavy metals and synthetic coatings and offers excellent nonstick performance without the harmful chemicals. Glass and carbon steel are also safe, versatile options depending on your cooking style. By choosing these safer, time-tested materials, you’re creating a kitchen that supports your health while helping you cook up beautiful meals for years to come.

What are the relevant certifications?

When shopping for nontoxic cookware, certifications can help you cut through the marketing noise and feel confident about what you’re bringing into your kitchen. Here’s what you should look out for:

  • Prop 65 compliant: Cookware that’s compliant meets California’s stringent safety standards for heavy metals and toxic substances.
  • FDA-approved: This label indicates that materials used in the cookware are deemed safe for food contact.
  • Lead- and cadmium-free: This is important for ceramic and enameled cookware to ensure no heavy metal leaching.
  • PFAS-, PFOA-, and PTFE-free: This label guarantees the cookware is free from harmful “forever chemicals” commonly found in nonstick coatings.
  • Third-party lab testing: Some cookware brands provide independent lab results to verify safety and nontoxic claims.

Our methodology & criteria:

For this guide, I’ve rounded up my favorite nontoxic and eco-friendly cookware and personally tested out some of their best-selling products to find out how they compare with their conventional counterparts. Below, I’ve included notes on how it was to cook with each brand’s wares, how they wore over time, and other details that delighted me. (Spoiler alert: I am obsessed with these goods!) All of the brands on this list meet the following criteria.

  • NONTOXIC/PFAS-FREE | All of the pots and pans on this list are free of unsafe chemical coatings and finishes. We’ve opted for tried-and-true materials like cast iron and stainless steel, as well as newer options that are guaranteed to be safe.
  • PERFORMS IN THE KITCHEN | I tested each piece of cookware for a variety of meals. Every option on this list produces something delicious.
  • EASY TO CLEAN | We’ve prioritized options that are still easy to clean, even without the nonstick coating.
  • MADE TO LAST | I’ve used each of these pots and pans in my kitchen for months and even years.

I tested: Reserve Pro Ceramic Nonstick 8″, 10,” and 12″ Frypan Set | Sage

I made a beautiful fried egg with crispy sides in the GreenPan Frypan Set – completely nonstick; the egg slid right off. It cleaned easily with just a little water and a sponge. I love the brass handles to elevate my kitchen vibe overall, and they’re oven- and broiler-safe up to 600°F, which is perfect for frittatas.

GreenPan has been making nontoxic cookware since 2007 with their Thermolon™ material (derived from sand, not PFAS)…. It’s one of the OGs, the first nontoxic nonstick I remember hearing about. They were literally founded to offer a safer alternative to traditional nonstick cookware and its harmful coatings, and since PFAS only became a mainstream conversation recently, they were certainly ahead of the game. They’ve won accolades from Good Housekeeping to America’s Test Kitchen to Oprah. Works on all cooktops, including induction, and these are made to last. They are dishwasher safe, but I’m hand-washing mine to keep them sparkly and nonstick.

I tested: Fry Pan Trio + Lids

I’ve seen Caraway all over social media for years, and I’m happy to report that it’s as durable and high quality as it is cute. I’ve used these three pans the most out of all the cookware I tested. The glass lids are a major plus – I love steaming things when I pan-fry, even eggs, to get the top nice and cooked. You can see right through them, and they have a little hole for steam to come out. Plus, I love having a small pan just for eggs.

Caraway uses only ceramic and mineral coatings — no PFAS or suspect chemicals. They’re ethically made and come in eco-friendly, recyclable packaging. I love that they come in great sets for a generous discount, or you can pick up a single piece if that’s what you need. The hype is real.

I tested: Titanium Always Pan Pro 10.5”

I’ve had Our Place’s classic pans for years — three of them — and after about eight months of solid nonstick, the sticking starts happening. Eventually I have to throw them out. But last year I switched to their Titanium Pan, and it’s a completely different experience. Super nonstick, way higher quality than the classic version. The texture is unique, like a honeycomb – they call it their NoCo nonstick coating. It’s nontoxic, high-performance titanium and stainless steel, and this one really feels like it will last a lifetime versus being a trendy buy.

I’ve been using it for months now and throwing it in the dishwasher regularly, and it’s holding up beautifully. Our Place is ethically made with responsible materials, and they also partner with organizations combating food insecurity. The pan is beautiful too, and has a lid, which is a must for me!

I tested: Sur La Table Enameled Cast Iron Skillet, 10″

I’d love to be a cast iron girl — it feels like all the good home cooks are — but I have yet to get the hang of it. As demonstrated by my egg, which did not turn out the best of the bunch. Still tasty, but a little hard to flip! But I have to say, Sur La Table’s Enameled Cast Iron Skillet is heavy, high-quality, and actually cute. The enamel coating gives it a polished look that doesn’t feel as intimidating as traditional cast iron, and it takes some of the guesswork out of seasoning and maintenance.

Sur La Table is a kitchen store that has just about everything you need, whether you’re replacing a favorite pan or upgrading your entire collection. They carry ceramic nonstick, stainless steel, cast iron, and carbon steel – so there’s something for every cooking style and budget. Their focus is on quality and durability, which means you’re investing in cookware that can handle everyday cooking and stand the test of time!

I tested: Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan Set: 8″ & 10″

These Quince pans are truly a great nonstick option at a great price. There’s no reason not to try them — they’re beautiful, and my eggs flipped with ease.

Quince continues to do what it does best: Luxe items at low prices. They continue to mystify me, creating so many great products across all categories. This ceramic nonstick set includes an 8″ pan perfect for morning eggs, and a 10″ pan for pasta or veggie stir-fries. Made with an aluminum body, stainless steel induction bottom, and handles for even heat distribution. The ceramic coating is PTFE, PFOA, cadmium, and lead-free — no forever chemicals. Oven-safe up to 500°F… so you can bake in them if you please. Plus, I hand-washed them with ease!

Best For | Pure ceramic cookware
Nontoxic Materials | Pure ceramic
Product Range | Cookware, bakeware, teaware, kitchen accessories
Price Range | $55–$800

I tested: Frying pan

This Xtrema frying pan is one of the most unique pans of the mix – it feels like a piece of art. It’s 100% ceramic, triple-fired and ultra-purified at 2,500 degrees. I made pasta in it, and the high sides make cooking easy with little spillage. The pan is a one-piece construction (WOW!) It feels durable, and heat is distributed evenly throughout. It cleans up easily, with no crevices to scrub, and is dishwasher safe. Cooking an egg in this pan in particular was interesting because it fell into the unique shape of the pan; the thinner parts of the egg ended up sticking a little since they cooked faster, but overall, the egg flipped seamlessly and tasted great!

Xtrema is one of the only brands making cookware that’s completely ceramic, with no synthetic glues, polymers, dyes, or coatings. The ceramic distributes heat evenly and retains it beautifully. It’s scratch-resistant, stain-proof, and metal-free, so nothing leaches into your food. Works on every heat source — oven, microwave, BBQ, freezer, dishwasher. PFOA- and PTFE-free, no extractable lead or cadmium. The brand is so confident in the product that it comes with a 10-year warranty and a lifetime replacement program. That’s the kind of confidence that backs up quality.

8. Lodge

Best For | Naturally nontoxic cast iron
Nontoxic Materials | Seasoned cast iron, enameled cast iron, seasoned carbon steel
Product Range | Cookware, bakeware, grilling, outdoor
Price Range | $13–$800

I tested: 13.25inch Chef Collection Skillet

Lodge is definitely the original cast iron. I tested an extra-large skillet with the hopes of bringing it on a camping trip to feed a group. And clearly, you could make eggs on this one for a large family event! Although I have to say, since this skillet is new and unseasoned, it’s hard not for them to stick… but despite their subpar presentation, they were fluffy and delicious. I think cast iron eggs are something I need to practice! What I’ve learned about cast iron pans after a few years of using them, mostly for cooking meat and fish, is that they definitely get better over time – and they require seasoning, which means wiping your pan down with some oil between uses to create a nonstick surface and prevent rust. Make sure you read their seasoning guide to learn how to do it properly so it lasts a lifetime.

Lodge has been crafting cast iron cookware in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, since 1896, making it one of the most trusted names in American kitchens. Every piece is made from just iron and vegetable oil – no synthetic coatings, no PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, or any harmful chemicals. Each pan comes pre-seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil. The heat retention is unbeatable, and it heats evenly, making it perfect for searing, baking, sautéing, frying – whether you’re cooking on the stove, in the oven, on the grill, or over a campfire. With proper care, these pieces are truly built to last for generations.
