Knowing Your Numbers

In my last article I made the case that conventional fertility programs are costing farmers real money — and that the soil tests driving most of those programs don’t actually measure what we think they do. Understanding what’s wrong with the current approach is step one. Knowing what to do instead is step two. That’s where Decoding the Secrets of Soil: From Test Results to Better Decisions comes in.

The Gap Between Data and Decisions

Farmers and agronomists are swimming in soil test data. Conventional soil tests, biology tests, plant tests — the list keeps growing. But more data doesn’t always translate into better decisions. If anything, it can create more confusion and more spending.

The Fertilizer Fallacy laid out why: conventional soil tests measure what a strong acid can pull out of your soil in a lab. They don’t measure what your crop can access. They don’t account for mycorrhizal networks, bacterial solubilization, or the rhizophagy cycle. They’re a proxy for a proxy — and we’ve been making expensive, field-scale decisions based on them for decades.

This webinar series picks up where that article left off: not just “what’s wrong,” but “what do you actually do with a soil test report?”

What the Course Covers

Decoding the Secrets of Soil is a five-session live webinar series. Each session builds on the last, moving from soil function fundamentals to real-world case studies. Here’s what is covered:

  • Module 1 — Soil & Plant Function: Why does aggregation matter? How do plants actually acquire nutrients? This module sets the biological context that makes everything else interpretable.
  • Module 2 — Chemical Soil Tests: What conventional and total nutrient tests are really measuring — and where they mislead you if taken out of context.
  • Module 3 — Physical & Biological Tests: Aggregation assessments, Haney, PLFA, DNA analysis, and microscopy. When these tools are useful and what their limitations are.
  • Module 4 — Plant Testing: Brix, tissue, biomass, and sap analysis as a real-time window into what’s actually happening in the soil-plant system.
  • Module 5 — Putting It All Together: Real case studies. Actual test results. Decision pathways you can apply to your own fields.

Who Should Attend

This course is for farmers and ranchers who want to reduce inputs and improve soil function, agronomists and consultants ready to move beyond conventional testing frameworks, and growers of any scale who want to stop chasing numbers and start improving the system that produces them.

The Bottom Line on Cost

The full five-session course is $47. Given that a single fertility decision could cost you many times that amount — The Fertilizer Fallacy showed just how quickly those dollars add up — this is about as low-risk as continuing education gets. If you want to get more out of your soil test data, spend less on inputs, and make decisions rooted in how soil biology actually works — this series was built for you.
