Key Takeaways
- There are 93 high income countries (and territories) in the latest World Bank classification list.
- As for the others: upper-middle income (55 countries), lower-middle income (50 countries), and low income (25).
- Countries move between four income brackets—low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high—based on their GNI per capita.
The World Bank updates its income brackets every July 1, ranking economies by Gross National Income (GNI) per capita using the Atlas methodology.
The 2025 update covers 223 reporting economies (including dozens of small territories), painting a fresh picture of global prosperity.
The data for this visualization comes from the World Bank’s FY 2026 income classification release.
Overall, 40% of economies now sit in the high income camp, while the share of low income countries has fallen to just 12%.
Where High Income Countries Cluster
The World Bank lists 87 high income sovereign countries in its core table, and an additional handful of tiny territories brings the broader total to 93.

Europe remains the epicenter of affluence, with more than two-thirds of its countries in the top bracket.
East Asia and the Pacific follows, thanks to powerhouses like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and a growing roster of Pacific territories.
Costa Rica is the newest addition to the high income category.
For reference, high income status for this year requires a 2024 GNI per capita above $13,936. And while the barrier inches upward each year with inflation, the long-term trend shows steady expansion.
Only 25% of the world’s economies met the bar in 1987 versus 40% today.
The Middle Income Majority
Middle income economies—split between upper-middle (55) and lower-middle (50)—account for just under half the list.
China, Indonesia, India, Brazil, and Türkiye all sit here, illustrating the category’s diversity.
Collectively, these nations hold the bulk of the world’s population and manufacturing muscle, yet their per-capita incomes range from roughly $1,100 to $13,900.
Momentum within this group is dynamic. Several commodity exporters, including Algeria and Mongolia, graduated to upper-middle status last cycle on the back of stronger nominal GNI.
This year, Cabo Verde and Samoa moved to upper-middle income, while Namibia slipped back to lower-middle amid weaker mining growth.
The Concentrated Challenges of Low Income Economies
Only 25 economies remain classified as low income, with the majority concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa and a handful in fragile or conflict-affected regions.
These countries generate less than $1,135 in GNI per person, limiting fiscal capacity and access to private finance.
Zooming out however, the share of low income economies has tumbled from 30% in 1987 to 12% today, reflecting decades of growth, debt relief, and demographic change.
Yet absolute numbers have plateaued in recent years, signaling how difficult the last mile of poverty reduction can be.
